Death of Jesus Christ Significance
1) All firstborn males for service or sacrifice prefigured Jesus Christ.
Then the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, “Consecrate to Me all the
firstborn, whatever opens the womb among the children of Israel, both
of man and beast; it is Mine.” Exodus 13:1-2
“But the firstborn of the animals, which should be the LORD’s
firstborn, no man shall dedicate; whether it is an ox or sheep, it is
the LORD’s.” Leviticus 27:26
“On the day that I struck all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, I
sanctified to Myself all the firstborn in Israel, both man and beast.
They shall be Mine: I am the LORD.” Numbers 3:13
“All the firstborn males that come from your herd and your flock you
shall sanctify to the LORD your God; you shall do no work with the
firstborn of your herd, nor shear the firstborn of your flock.”
Deuteronomy 15:19
So, all this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by
the Lord through the prophet, saying: “Behold, the virgin shall be with
child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel,” which is
translated, “God with us.” Then Joseph, being aroused from sleep, did
as the angel of the Lord commanded him and took him his wife, and did
not know her till she had brought forth her firstborn Son. And he
called His name JESUS. Matthew 1:22-25
"And whoever desires to be first among you, let him be your slave— just
as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give
His life a ransom for many.” Matthew 20:27-28
2) Shedding of blood for remission of sins was a requirement by God.
So, Moses came and told the people all the words of the LORD and all
the judgments. And all the people answered with one voice and said,
“All the words which the LORD has said we will do.” And Moses wrote all
the words of the LORD. And he rose early in the morning and built an
altar at the foot of the mountain, and twelve pillars according to the
twelve tribes of Israel. Then he sent young men of the children of
Israel, who offered burnt offerings and sacrificed peace offerings of
oxen to the LORD. And Moses took half the blood and put it in basins,
and half the blood he sprinkled on the altar. Then he took the Book of
the Covenant and read in the hearing of the people. And they said, “All
that the LORD has said we will do and be obedient.” And Moses took the
blood, sprinkled it on the people, and said, “This is the blood of the
covenant which the LORD has made with you according to all these
words.” Exodus 24:3-8
Then He took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying,
“Drink from it, all of you. For this is My blood of the new covenant,
which is shed for many for the remission of sins. Matthew 26:27-28
For where there is a testament, there must also of necessity be the
death of the testator. For a testament is in force after men are dead,
since it has no power at all while the testator lives. Therefore, not
even the first covenant was dedicated without blood. For when Moses had
spoken every precept to all the people according to the law, he took
the blood of calves and goats, with water, scarlet wool, and hyssop,
and sprinkled both the book itself and all the people, saying, “This is
the blood of the covenant which God has commanded you.” Then likewise
he sprinkled with blood both the tabernacle and all the vessels of the
ministry. And according to the law almost all things are purified with
blood, and without shedding of blood there is no remission. Hebrews
9:16-22
3) Jesus Christ became accursed of God for believers through faith.
“If a man has committed a sin deserving of death, and he is put to
death, and you hang him on a tree, his body shall not remain overnight
on the tree, but you shall surely bury him that day, so that you do not
defile the land which the LORD your God is giving you as an
inheritance; for he who is hanged is accursed of God.” Deuteronomy
21:22-23
For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse; for it
is written, “Cursed is everyone who does not continue in all things
which are written in the book of the law, to do them.” But that no one
is justified by the law in the sight of God is evident, for “the just
shall live by faith.” Yet the law is not of faith, but “the man who
does them shall live by them.” Christ has redeemed us from the curse of
the law, having become a curse for us (for it is written, “Cursed is
everyone who hangs on a tree”), that the blessing of Abraham might come
upon the Gentiles in Christ Jesus, that we might receive the promise of
the Spirit through faith. Galatians 3:10-14
4) David prophesied that Jesus Christ would not decay after death.
Therefore, my heart is glad, and my glory rejoices; My flesh also will
rest in hope. For You will not leave my soul in Sheol, nor will You
allow Your Holy One to see corruption. Psalms 16:9-10
“Men of Israel, hear these words: Jesus of Nazareth, a Man attested by
God to you by miracles, wonders, and signs which God did through Him in
your midst, as you yourselves also know— Him, being delivered by the
determined purpose and foreknowledge of God, you have taken by lawless
hands, have crucified, and put to death; whom God raised up, having
loosed the pains of death, because it was not possible that He should
be held by it. For David says concerning Him: ‘I foresaw the LORD
always before my face, for He is at my right hand, that I may not be
shaken. Therefore, my heart rejoiced, and my tongue was glad; Moreover,
my flesh also will rest in hope. For You will not leave my soul in
Hades, nor will You allow Your Holy One to see corruption. You have
made known to me the ways of life; You will make me full of joy in Your
presence.’ Men and brethren, let me speak freely to you of the
patriarch David, that he is both dead and buried, and his tomb is with
us to this day. Therefore, being a prophet, and knowing that God had
sworn with an oath to him that of the fruit of his body, according to
the flesh, He would raise up the Christ to sit on his throne, he,
foreseeing this, spoke concerning the resurrection of the Christ, that
His soul was not left in Hades, nor did His flesh see corruption. Acts
2:22-31
5) David prophesied about the death of Jesus Christ.
My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me? Why are You so far from
helping Me, and from the words of My groaning? O My God, I cry in the
daytime, but You do not hear; And in the night season and am not
silent. But You are holy, enthroned in the praises of Israel. Our
fathers trusted in You; They trusted, and You delivered them. They
cried to You and were delivered; They trusted in You and were not
ashamed. But I am a worm, and no man; A reproach of men and despised by
the people. All those who see Me ridicule Me; They shoot out the lip,
they shake the head, saying, “He trusted in the LORD, let Him rescue
Him; Let Him deliver Him, since He delights in Him!” But You are He who
took Me out of the womb; You made Me trust while on My mother’s
breasts. I was cast upon You from birth. From My mother’s womb You have
been My God. Be not far from Me, for trouble is near; For there is none
to help. Many bulls have surrounded Me; Strong bulls of Bashan have
encircled Me. They gape at Me with their mouths, like a raging and
roaring lion. I am poured out like water, and all My bones are out of
joint; My heart is like wax; It has melted within Me. My strength is
dried up like a potsherd, and My tongue clings to My jaws; You have
brought Me to the dust of death. For dogs have surrounded Me; The
congregation of the wicked has enclosed Me. They pierced My hands and
My feet; I can count all My bones. They look and stare at Me. They
divide My garments among them, and for My clothing they cast lots.
Psalms 22:1-18
6) David prophesied of a New Covenant in the death of the Messiah.
Sacrifice and offering You did not desire; My ears You have opened.
Burnt offering and sin offering You did not require. Then I said,
“Behold, I come; In the scroll of the book it is written of me. Psalms
40:6-7
For I received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you: that
the Lord Jesus on the same night in which He was betrayed took bread;
and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, “Take, eat; this is
My body which is broken for you; do this in remembrance of Me.” In the
same manner He also took the cup after supper, saying, “This cup is the
new covenant in My blood. This do, as often as you drink it, in
remembrance of Me.” For as often as you eat this bread and drink this
cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death till He comes. 1 Corinthians 11:23-26
Therefore, when He came into the world, He said: “Sacrifice and
offering You did not desire, but a body You have prepared for Me. In
burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin You had no pleasure. Then I
said, ‘Behold, I have come— In the volume of the book it is written of
Me—to do Your will, O God.’” Previously saying, “Sacrifice and
offering, burnt offerings, and offerings for sin You did not desire,
nor had pleasure in them” (which are offered according to the law),
then He said, “Behold, I have come to do Your will, O God.” He takes
away the first that He may establish the second. By that will we have
been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once
for all. Hebrews 10:5-10
7) Isaiah prophesied about the death of Jesus Christ.
Who has believed our report? And to whom has the arm of the LORD been
revealed? For He shall grow up before Him as a tender plant, and as a
root out of dry ground. He has no form or comeliness; And when we see
Him, there is no beauty that we should desire Him. He is despised and
rejected by men, a Man of sorrows and acquainted with grief. And we
hid, as it were, our faces from Him; He was despised, and we did not
esteem Him. Surely, He has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows;
Yet we esteemed Him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted. But He was
wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; The
chastisement for our peace was upon Him, and by His stripes we are
healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; We have turned, everyone,
to his own way; And the LORD has laid on Him the iniquity of us all. He
was oppressed and He was afflicted, yet He opened not His mouth; He was
led as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before its shearers is
silent, so He opened not His mouth. He was taken from prison and from
judgment, and who will declare His generation? For He was cut off from
the land of the living; For the transgressions of My people, He was
stricken. And they made His grave with the wicked— but with the rich at
His death, because He had done no violence, nor was any deceit in His
mouth. Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise Him; He has put Him to grief.
When You make His soul an offering for sin, He shall see His seed, He
shall prolong His days, and the pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in
His hand. He shall see the labor of His soul and be satisfied. By His
knowledge My righteous Servant shall justify many, for He shall bear
their iniquities. Therefore, I will divide Him a portion with the
great, and He shall divide the spoil with the strong, because He poured
out His soul unto death, and He was numbered with the transgressors,
and He bore the sin of many, and made intercession for the
transgressors. Isaiah 53
8) Jeremiah prophesied a New Covenant would reconcile us to God through faith.
“Behold, the days are coming, says the LORD, when I will make a new
covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah— not
according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day
that I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt, My
covenant which they broke, though I was a husband to them, says the
LORD. But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of
Israel after those days, says the LORD: I will put My law in their
minds, and write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they
shall be My people. No more shall every man teach his neighbor, and
every man his brother, saying, ‘Know the LORD,’ for they all shall know
Me, from the least of them to the greatest of them, says the LORD. For
I will forgive their iniquity, and their sin I will remember no more.”
Jeremiah 31:31-34
And He took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them,
saying, “This is My body which is given for you; do this in remembrance
of Me.” Likewise He also took the cup after supper, saying, “This cup
is the new covenant in My blood, which is shed for you.” Luke 22:19-20
But the Holy Spirit also witnesses to us; for after He had said before,
“This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, says
the LORD: I will put My laws into their hearts, and in their minds I
will write them,” then He adds, “Their sins and their lawless deeds I
will remember no more.” Now where there is remission of these, there is
no longer an offering for sin. Therefore, brethren, having boldness to
enter the Holiest by the blood of Jesus, by a new and living way which
He consecrated for us, through the veil, that is, His flesh, and having
a High Priest over the house of God, let us draw near with a true heart
in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil
conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. Let us hold fast the
confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is
faithful. Hebrews 10:15-23
9) Ezekiel prophesied about the Good Shepherd.
For thus says the Lord GOD: “Indeed I Myself will search for My sheep
and seek them out. As a shepherd seeks out his flock on the day he is
among his scattered sheep, so will I seek out My sheep and deliver them
from all the places where they were scattered on a cloudy and dark day.
And I will bring them out from the peoples and gather them from the
countries and will bring them to their own land; I will feed them on
the mountains of Israel, in the valleys and in all the inhabited places
of the country. I will feed them in good pasture, and their fold shall
be on the high mountains of Israel. There they shall lie down in a good
fold and feed in rich pasture on the mountains of Israel. I will feed
My flock, and I will make them lie down,” says the Lord GOD. “I will
seek what was lost and bring back what was driven away, bind up the
broken and strengthen what was sick; but I will destroy the fat and the
strong, and feed them in judgment.” Ezekiel 34:11-16
“I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd gives His life for the
sheep. But a hireling, he who is not the shepherd, one who does not own
the sheep, sees the wolf coming and leaves the sheep and flees; and the
wolf catches the sheep and scatters them. The hireling flees because he
is a hireling and does not care about the sheep. I am the good
shepherd; and I know My sheep and am known by My own. As the Father
knows Me, even so I know the Father; and I lay down My life for the
sheep. And other sheep I have which are not of this fold; them also I
must bring, and they will hear My voice; and there will be one flock
and one shepherd.” John 10:11-16
10) Daniel prophesied Jesus Christ (Messiah) dying for others.
At the beginning of your supplications the command went out, and I have
come to tell you, for you are greatly beloved; therefore consider the
matter, and understand the vision: “Seventy weeks are determined for
your people and for your holy city, to finish the transgression, to
make an end of sins, to make reconciliation for iniquity, to bring in
everlasting righteousness, to seal up vision and prophecy, and to
anoint the Most Holy. Know therefore and understand, that from the
going forth of the command to restore and build Jerusalem until Messiah
the Prince, there shall be seven weeks and sixty-two weeks; The street
shall be built again, and the wall, even in troublesome times. And
after the sixty-two weeks Messiah shall be cut off, but not for
Himself; And the people of the prince who is to come shall destroy the
city and the sanctuary. The end of it shall be with a flood, and till
the end of the war desolations are determined. Then he shall confirm a
covenant with many for one week; But in the middle of the week he shall
bring an end to sacrifice and offering. And on the wing of abominations
shall be one who makes desolate, even until the consummation, which is
determined, is poured out on the desolate.” Daniel 9:23-27
11) Hosea prophesied about redemption after death.
“I will ransom them from the power of the grave; I will redeem them
from death. O Death, I will be your plagues! O Grave, I will be your
destruction! Pity is hidden from My eyes.” Hosea 13:14
So, when this corruptible has put on incorruption, and this mortal has
put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is
written: “Death is swallowed up in victory. O Death, where is your
sting? O Hades, where is your victory?” The sting of death is sin, and
the strength of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, who gives us the
victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. 1 Corinthians 15:54-57
12) Amos prophesied about the day Jesus Christ died.
“And it shall come to pass in that day,” says the Lord GOD, “That I
will make the sun go down at noon, and I will darken the earth in broad
daylight; I will turn your feasts into mourning, and all your songs
into lamentation; I will bring sackcloth on every waist, and baldness
on every head; I will make it like mourning for an only son, and its
end like a bitter day.” Amos 8:9-10
13) Jonah prefigured Jesus Christ.
Nevertheless, the men rowed hard to return to land, but they could not,
for the sea continued to grow more tempestuous against them. Therefore,
they cried out to the LORD and said, “We pray, O LORD, please do not
let us perish for this man’s life, and do not charge us with innocent
blood; for You, O LORD, have done as it pleased You.” So, they picked
up Jonah and threw him into the sea, and the sea ceased from its
raging. Then the men feared the LORD exceedingly and offered a
sacrifice to the LORD and took vows. Jonah 1:13-16
Then some of the scribes and Pharisees answered, saying, “Teacher, we
want to see a sign from You.” But He answered and said to them, “An
evil and adulterous generation seeks after a sign, and no sign will be
given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. For as Jonah was
three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so will the
Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.
Matthew 12:38-40
14) Zechariah prophesied about the betrayal and death of Jesus Christ.
“Awake,
O sword, against My Shepherd, against the Man who is My Companion,”
says the LORD of hosts. “Strike the Shepherd, and the sheep will be
scattered;” Zechariah 13:7
Then Jesus said to them, “All of you will be made to stumble because of
Me this night, for it is written: ‘I will strike the Shepherd, and the
sheep of the flock will be scattered.’ But after I have been raised, I
will go before you to Galilee.” Matthew 26:31-32
And the LORD said to me, “Throw it to the potter”—that princely price
they set on me. So, I took the thirty pieces of silver and threw them
into the house of the LORD for the potter. Zechariah 11:13
Then Judas, His betrayer, seeing that He had been condemned, was
remorseful and brought back the thirty pieces of silver to the chief
priests and elders, saying, “I have sinned by betraying innocent
blood.” And they said, “What is that to us? You see to it!” Then he
threw down the pieces of silver in the temple and departed and went and
hanged himself. But the chief priests took the silver pieces and said,
“It is not lawful to put them into the treasury, because they are the
price of blood.” And they consulted together and bought with them the
potter’s field, to bury strangers in. Matthew 27:3-7
“And I will pour on the house of David and on the inhabitants of
Jerusalem the Spirit of grace and supplication; then they will look on
Me whom they pierced. Yes, they will mourn for Him as one mourns for
his only son and grieve for Him as one grieves for a firstborn.”
Zechariah 12:10
For these things were done that the Scripture should be fulfilled, “Not
one of His bones shall be broken.” And again, another Scripture says,
“They shall look on Him whom they pierced.” John 19:36-37
15) Jesus Christ predicts His death the first time.
Now the Passover of the Jews was at hand, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. And He found in the temple those who sold oxen and sheep and doves, and the money changers doing business. When
He had made a whip of cords, He drove them all out of the temple, with
the sheep and the oxen, and poured out the changers’ money and
overturned the tables. And He said to those who sold doves, “Take these things away! Do not make My Father’s house a house of merchandise!” Then His disciples remembered that it was written, “Zeal for Your house has eaten Me up.” So the Jews answered and said to Him, “What sign do You show to us, since You do these things?” Jesus answered and said to them, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.” Then the Jews said, “It has taken forty-six years to build this temple, and will You raise it up in three days?” But He was speaking of the temple of His body. Therefore,
when He had risen from the dead, His disciples remembered that He had
said this to them; and they believed the Scripture and the word which
Jesus had said. John 2:13-22
16) Jesus Christ predicts His death the second time.
From that time Jesus began to show to His disciples that He must go to
Jerusalem and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and
scribes, and be killed, and be raised the third day. Matthew 16:21
And He began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things
and be rejected by the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be
killed, and after three days rise again. Mark 8:31
And He strictly warned and commanded them to tell this to no one,
saying, “The Son of Man must suffer many things, and be rejected by the
elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised the
third day.” Luke 9:21-22
17) Jesus Christ predicts His death a third time.
Now while they were staying in Galilee, Jesus said to them, “The Son of
Man is about to be betrayed into the hands of men, and they will kill
Him, and the third day He will be raised up.” And they were exceedingly
sorrowful.” Matthew 17:22-23
For He taught His disciples and said to them, “The Son of Man is being
betrayed into the hands of men, and they will kill Him. And after He is
killed, He will rise the third day.” Mark 9:31
But while everyone marveled at all the things which Jesus did, He said
to His disciples, “Let these words sink down into your ears, for the
Son of Man is about to be betrayed into the hands of men.” Luke 9:43-44
18) Jesus Christ predicts His death a fourth time.
Now Jesus, going up to Jerusalem, took the twelve disciples aside on
the road and said to them, “Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and
the Son of Man will be betrayed to the chief priests and to the
scribes; and they will condemn Him to death, and deliver Him to the
Gentiles to mock and to scourge and to crucify. And the third day He
will rise again.” Matthew 20:17-19
Now they were on the road, going up to Jerusalem, and Jesus was going
before them; and they were amazed. And as they followed, they were
afraid. Then He took the twelve aside again and began to tell them the
things that would happen to Him: “Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem,
and the Son of Man will be betrayed to the chief priests and to the
scribes; and they will condemn Him to death and deliver Him to the
Gentiles; and they will mock Him, and scourge Him, and spit on Him, and
kill Him. And the third day He will rise again.” Mark 10:32-34
Then He took the twelve aside and said to them, “Behold, we are going
up to Jerusalem, and all things that are written by the prophets
concerning the Son of Man will be accomplished. For He will be
delivered to the Gentiles and will be mocked and insulted and spit
upon. They will scourge Him and kill Him. And the third day He will
rise again.” Luke 18:31-33
19) Jesus Christ predicts His death a fifth time.
Now there were certain Greeks among those who came up to worship at the
feast. Then they came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida of Galilee, and
asked him, saying, “Sir, we wish to see Jesus.” Philip came and told
Andrew, and in turn Andrew and Philip told Jesus. But Jesus answered
them, saying, “The hour has come that the Son of Man should be
glorified. Most assuredly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls
into the ground and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it produces
much grain. He who loves his life will lose it, and he who hates his
life in this world will keep it for eternal life. If anyone serves Me,
let him follow Me; and where I am, there My servant will be also. If
anyone serves Me, him My Father will honor. Now My soul is troubled,
and what shall I say? ‘Father, save Me from this hour’? But for this
purpose, I came to this hour. Father, glorify Your name.” Then a voice
came from heaven, saying, “I have both glorified it and will glorify it
again.” Therefore, the people who stood by and heard it said that it
had thundered. Others said, “An angel has spoken to Him.” Jesus
answered and said, “This voice did not come because of Me, but for your
sake. Now is the judgment of this world; now the ruler of this world
will be cast out. And I, if I am lifted up from the earth, will draw
all peoples to Myself.” This He said, signifying by what death He would
die. The people answered Him, “We have heard from the law that the
Christ remains forever; and how can You say, ‘The Son of Man must be
lifted up’? Who is this Son of Man?” Then Jesus said to them, “A little
while longer the light is with you. Walk while you have the light, lest
darkness overtake you; he who walks in darkness does not know where he
is going. While you have the light, believe in the light, that you may
become sons of light.” These things Jesus spoke, and departed, and was
hidden from them. John 12:20-36
20) Religious leaders plotted the death of Jesus Christ.
When morning came, all the chief priests and elders of the people
plotted against Jesus to put Him to death. And when they had bound Him,
they led Him away and delivered Him to Pontius Pilate the governor.
Matthew 27:1-2
Immediately, in the morning, the chief priests held a consultation with
the elders and scribes and the whole council; and they bound Jesus, led
Him away, and delivered Him to Pilate. Mark 15:1
Then the whole multitude of them arose and led Him to Pilate. And they
began to accuse Him, saying, “We found this fellow perverting the
nation, and forbidding to pay taxes to Caesar, saying that He Himself
is Christ, a King.” Luke 23:1-2
Then they led Jesus from Caiaphas to the Praetorium, and it was early
morning. But they themselves did not go into the Praetorium, lest they
should be defiled, but that they might eat the Passover. Pilate then
went out to them and said, “What accusation do you bring against this
Man?” They answered and said to him, “If He were not an evildoer, we
would not have delivered Him up to you.” Then Pilate said to them, “You
take Him and judge Him according to your law.” Therefore, the Jews said
to him, “It is not lawful for us to put anyone to death,” that the
saying of Jesus might be fulfilled which He spoke, signifying by what
death He would die. John 18:28-32
21) Death of Jesus Christ on the cross.
Now from the sixth hour until the ninth hour there was darkness over
all the land. And about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud
voice, saying, “Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?” that is, “My God, My God,
why have You forsaken Me?” Some of those who stood there, when they
heard that, said, “This Man is calling for Elijah!” Immediately one
of them ran and took a sponge, filled it with sour wine and put it on a
reed, and offered it to Him to drink. The rest said, “Let Him alone;
let us see if Elijah will come to save Him.” And Jesus cried out again
with a loud voice and yielded up His spirit. Then, behold, the veil of
the temple was torn in two from top to bottom; and the earth quaked,
and the rocks were split, and the graves were opened; and many bodies
of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised; and coming out of the
graves after His resurrection, they went into the holy city and
appeared to many. So when the centurion and those with him, who were
guarding Jesus, saw the earthquake and the things that had happened,
they feared greatly, saying, “Truly this was the Son of God!” Matthew
27:45-54
Now when the sixth hour had come, there was darkness over the whole
land until the ninth hour. And at the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a
loud voice, saying, “Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?” which is
translated, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?” Some of those
who stood by, when they heard that, said, “Look, He is calling for
Elijah!” Then someone ran and filled a sponge full of sour wine, put it
on a reed, and offered it to Him to drink, saying, “Let Him alone; let
us see if Elijah will come to take Him down.” And Jesus cried out with
a loud voice and breathed His last. Then the veil of the temple was
torn in two from top to bottom. So, when the centurion, who stood
opposite Him, saw that He cried out like this and breathed His last, he
said, “Truly this Man was the Son of God!” Mark 15:33-39
Now it was about the sixth hour, and there was darkness over all the
earth until the ninth hour. Then the sun was darkened, and the veil of
the temple was torn in two. And when Jesus had cried out with a loud
voice, He said, “Father, into Your hands I commit My spirit.” Having
said this, He breathed His last. So, when the centurion saw what had
happened, he glorified God, saying, “Certainly this was a righteous
Man!” Luke 23:44-47
After this, Jesus, knowing that all things were now accomplished, that
the Scripture might be fulfilled, said, “I thirst!” Now a vessel full
of sour wine was sitting there; and they filled a sponge with sour
wine, put it on hyssop, and put it to His mouth. So, when Jesus had
received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished!” And bowing His head,
He gave up His spirit. Therefore, because it was the Preparation Day,
that the bodies should not remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for that
Sabbath was a high day), the Jews asked Pilate that their legs might be
broken, and that they might be taken away. Then the soldiers came and
broke the legs of the first and of the other who was crucified with
Him. But when they came to Jesus and saw that He was already dead, they
did not break His legs. But one of the soldiers pierced His side with a
spear, and immediately blood and water came out. And he who has seen
has testified, and his testimony is true; and he knows that he is
telling the truth, so that you may believe.” John 19:28-35
22) Jesus Christ explains the significance of His death using Scripture.
Now behold, two of them were traveling that same day to a village
called Emmaus, which was seven miles from Jerusalem. And they talked
together about all these things which had happened. So it was, while
they conversed and reasoned, that Jesus Himself drew near and went with
them. But their eyes were restrained, so that they did not know Him.
And He said to them, “What kind of conversation is this that you have
with one another as you walk and are sad?” Then the one whose name was
Cleopas answered and said to Him, “Are You the only stranger in
Jerusalem, and have You not known the things which happened there in
these days?” And He said to them, “What things?” So, they said to Him,
“The things concerning Jesus of Nazareth, who was a Prophet mighty in
deed and word before God and all the people, and how the chief priests
and our rulers delivered Him to be condemned to death and crucified
Him. But we were hoping that it was He who was going to redeem Israel.
Indeed, besides all this, today is the third day since these things
happened. Yes, and certain women of our company, who arrived at the
tomb early, astonished us. When they did not find His body, they came
saying that they had also seen a vision of angels who said He was
alive. And certain of those who were with us went to the tomb and found
it just as the women had said; but Him they did not see.” Then He said
to them, “O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe in all that the
prophets have spoken! Ought not the Christ to have suffered these
things and to enter His glory?” And beginning with Moses and all the
Prophets, He expounded to them in all the Scriptures the things
concerning Himself. Luke 24:13-27
Now as they said these things, Jesus Himself stood in the midst of
them, and said to them, “Peace to you.” But they were terrified and
frightened, and supposed they had seen a spirit. And He said to them,
“Why are you troubled? And why do doubts arise in your hearts? Behold
My hands and My feet, that it is I Myself. Handle Me and see, for a
spirit does not have flesh and bones as you see I have.” When He had
said this, He showed them His hands and His feet. But while they still
did not believe for joy, and marveled, He said to them, “Have you any
food here?” So, they gave Him a piece of a broiled fish and some
honeycomb. And He took it and ate in their presence. Then He said to
them, “These are the words which I spoke to you while I was still with
you, that all things must be fulfilled which were written in the Law of
Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms concerning Me.” And He opened
their understanding, that they might comprehend the Scriptures. Then He
said to them, “Thus it is written, and thus it was necessary for the
Christ to suffer and to rise from the dead the third day, and that
repentance and remission of sins should be preached in His name to all
nations, beginning at Jerusalem. And you are witnesses of these things.
Behold, I send the Promise of My Father upon you; but tarry in the city
of Jerusalem until you are endued with power from on high.” Luke
24:36-49
23) Paul preached the death of Jesus Christ for forgiveness of sins through belief.
“Men and brethren, sons of the family of Abraham, and those among you
who fear God, to you the word of this salvation has been sent. For
those who dwell in Jerusalem, and their rulers, because they did not
know Him, nor even the voices of the Prophets which are read every
Sabbath, have fulfilled them in condemning Him. And though they found
no cause for death in Him, they asked Pilate that He should be put to
death. Now when they had fulfilled all that was written concerning Him,
they took Him down from the tree and laid Him in a tomb. But God raised
Him from the dead. He was seen for many days by those who came up with
Him from Galilee to Jerusalem, who are His witnesses to the people. And
we declare to you glad tidings—that promise which was made to the
fathers. God has fulfilled this for us their children, in that He has
raised up Jesus. As it is also written in the second Psalm: ‘You are My
Son, today I have begotten You.’ And that He raised Him from the dead,
no more to return to corruption, He has spoken thus: ‘I will give you
the sure mercies of David.’ Therefore, He also says in another Psalm:
‘You will not allow Your Holy One to see corruption.’ For David, after
he had served his own generation by the will of God, fell asleep, was
buried with his fathers, and saw corruption; but He whom God raised up
saw no corruption. Therefore, let it be known to you, brethren, that
through this Man is preached to you the forgiveness of sins; and by Him
everyone who believes is justified from all things from which you could
not be justified by the law of Moses.” Acts 13:26-39
24) Faith in Jesus Christ gives believers the righteousness of God.
But now the righteousness of God apart from the law is revealed, being
witnessed by the Law and the Prophets, even the righteousness of God,
through faith in Jesus Christ, to all and on all who believe. For there
is no difference; for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of
God, being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is
in Christ Jesus, whom God set forth as a propitiation by His blood,
through faith, to demonstrate His righteousness, because in His
forbearance God had passed over the sins that were previously
committed, to demonstrate at the present time His righteousness, that
He might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.
Romans 3:21-26
O foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you that you should not obey the
truth, before whose eyes Jesus Christ was clearly portrayed among you
as crucified? This only I want to learn from you: Did you receive the
Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith? Are you so
foolish? Having begun in the Spirit, are you now being made perfect by
the flesh? Have you suffered so many things in vain—if indeed it was in
vain? Therefore, He who supplies the Spirit to you and works miracles
among you, does He do it by the works of the law, or by the hearing of
faith? — just as Abraham “believed God, and it was accounted to him for
righteousness.” Therefore, know that only those who are of faith are
sons of Abraham Galatians 3:1-7
25) Believers are reconciled to God through the death of Jesus Christ.
For when we were still without strength, in due time Christ died for
the ungodly. For scarcely for a righteous man will one die; yet perhaps
for a good man someone would even dare to die. But God demonstrates His
own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died
for us. Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we
shall be saved from wrath through Him. For if when we were enemies, we
were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having
been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life. And not only that, but
we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we
have now received the reconciliation. Romans 5:6-11
For He Himself is our peace, who has made both one, and has broken down
the middle wall of separation, having abolished in His flesh the
enmity, that is, the law of commandments contained in ordinances, so as
to create in Himself one new man from the two, thus making peace, and
that He might reconcile them both to God in one body through the cross,
thereby putting to death the enmity. Ephesians 2:14-16
For it pleased the Father that in Him all the fullness should dwell,
and by Him to reconcile all things to Himself, by Him, whether things
on earth or things in heaven, having made peace through the blood of
His cross. And you, who once were alienated and enemies in your mind by
wicked works, yet now He has reconciled in the body of His flesh
through death, to present you holy, and blameless, and above reproach
in His sight— if indeed you continue in the faith, grounded and
steadfast, and are not moved away from the hope of the gospel which you
heard, which was preached to every creature under heaven, of which I,
Paul, became a minister. Colossians 1:19-23
26) The death of Jesus Christ should energize believers in this lifetime.
What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound?
Certainly not! How shall we who died to sin live any longer in it? Or
do you not know that as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus
were baptized into His death? Therefore, we were buried with Him
through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the
dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness
of life. For if we have been united together in the likeness of His
death, certainly we also shall be in the likeness of His resurrection,
knowing this, that our old man was crucified with Him, that the body of
sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves of sin.
For he who has died has been freed from sin. Now if we died with
Christ, we believe that we shall also live with Him, knowing that
Christ, having been raised from the dead, dies no more. Death no longer
has dominion over Him. For the death that He died, He died to sin once
for all; but the life that He lives, He lives to God. Likewise, you
also, reckon yourselves to be dead indeed to sin, but alive to God in
Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 6:1-11
Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of
witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily
ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before
us, looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for
the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame,
and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Hebrews 12:1-2
27) The Christian message is the death of Jesus Christ for eternal life.
For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the gospel, not
with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of no
effect. Christ the Power and Wisdom of God For the message of the cross
is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being
saved it is the power of God. For it is written: “I will destroy the
wisdom of the wise and bring to nothing the understanding of the
prudent.” Where is the wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the disputer
of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of this world? For
since, in the wisdom of God, the world through wisdom did not know God,
it pleased God through the foolishness of the message preached to save
those who believe. For Jews request a sign, and Greeks seek after
wisdom; but we preach Christ crucified, to the Jews a stumbling block
and to the Greeks foolishness, but to those who are called, both Jews
and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. 1
Corinthians 1:17-24
And I, brethren, when I came to you, did not come with excellence of
speech or of wisdom declaring to you the testimony of God. For I
determined not to know anything among you except Jesus Christ and Him
crucified. 1 Corinthians 2:1-2
28) The Gospel is the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
Moreover, brethren, I declare to you the gospel which I preached to
you, which also you received and in which you stand, by which also you
are saved, if you hold fast that word which I preached to you—unless
you believed in vain. For I delivered to you first of all that which I
also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the
Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third
day according to the Scriptures, 1 Corinthians 15:1-4
Remember that Jesus Christ, of the seed of David, was raised from the
dead according to my gospel, for which I suffer trouble as an evildoer,
even to the point of chains; but the word of God is not chained.
Therefore, I endure all things for the sake of the elect, that they
also may obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus with eternal
glory. This is a faithful saying: For if we died with Him, we shall
also live with Him. If we endure, we shall also reign with Him. If we
deny Him, He also will deny us. If we are faithless, He remains
faithful; He cannot deny Himself. 2 Timothy 2:8-13
29) The death of Jesus Christ has destroyed the power of death and Satan.
Inasmuch then as the children have partaken of flesh and blood, He
Himself likewise shared in the same, that through death He might
destroy him who had the power of death, that is, the devil, and release
those who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to
bondage. For indeed He does not give aid to angels, but He does give
aid to the seed of Abraham. Therefore, in all things He had to be made
like His brethren, that He might be a merciful and faithful High Priest
in things pertaining to God, to make propitiation for the sins of the
people. For in that He Himself has suffered, being tempted, He is able
to aid those who are tempted. Hebrews 2:14-18
Then I turned to see the voice that spoke with me. And having turned I
saw seven golden lampstands, and in the midst of the seven lampstands
One like the Son of Man, clothed with a garment down to the feet and
girded about the chest with a golden band. His head and hair were white
like wool, as white as snow, and His eyes like a flame of fire; His
feet were like fine brass, as if refined in a furnace, and His voice as
the sound of many waters; He had in His right hand seven stars, out of
His mouth went a sharp two-edged sword, and His countenance was like
the sun shining in its strength. And when I saw Him, I fell at His feet
as dead. But He laid His right hand on me, saying to me, “Do not be
afraid; I am the First and the Last. I am He who lives, and was dead,
and behold, I am alive forevermore. Amen. And I have the keys of Hades
and of Death. Revelation 1:12-18
Then I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, “Now salvation, and
strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of His Christ have
come, for the accuser of our brethren, who accused them before our God
day and night, has been cast down. And they overcame him by the blood
of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, and they did not love
their lives to the death. Therefore rejoice, O heavens, and you who
dwell in them! Woe to the inhabitants of the earth and the sea! For the
devil has come down to you, having great wrath, because he knows that
he has a short time.” Revelation 12:10-12
30) Jesus Christ is reigning in glory after His death and resurrection.
Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, who, being in
the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, but
made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and
coming in the likeness of men. And being found in appearance as a man,
He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the
death of the cross. Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given
Him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every
knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of
those under the earth, and that every tongue should confess that Jesus
Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Philippians 2:5-11
For He has not put the world to come, of which we speak, in subjection
to angels. But one testified in a certain place, saying: “What is man
that You are mindful of him, or the son of man that You take care of
him? You have made him a little lower than the angels; You have crowned
him with glory and honor and set him over the works of Your hands. You
have put all things in subjection under his feet.” For in that He put
all in subjection under him, He left nothing that is not put under him.
But now we do not yet see all things put under him. But we see Jesus,
who was made a little lower than the angels, for the suffering of death
crowned with glory and honor, that He, by the grace of God, might taste
death for everyone. Hebrews 2:5-9
For Christ also suffered once for sins, the just for the unjust, that
He might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made
alive by the Spirit, by whom also He went and preached to the spirits
in prison, who formerly were disobedient, when once the Divine
longsuffering waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was being
prepared, in which a few, that is, eight souls, were saved through
water. There is also an antitype which now saves us—baptism (not the
removal of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience
toward God), through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, who has gone
into heaven and is at the right hand of God, angels and authorities and
powers having been made subject to Him. 1 Peter 3:18-22
And I looked, and behold, in the midst of the throne and of the four
living creatures, and in the midst of the elders, stood a Lamb as
though it had been slain, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are
the seven Spirits of God sent out into all the earth. Then He came and
took the scroll out of the right hand of Him who sat on the throne. Now
when He had taken the scroll, the four living creatures and the
twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb, each having a harp, and
golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints. And
they sang a new song, saying: “You are worthy to take the scroll, and
to open its seals; For You were slain, and have redeemed us to God by
Your blood out of every tribe and tongue and people and nation, and
have made us kings and priests to our God; And we shall reign on the
earth.” Then I looked, and I heard the voice of many angels around the
throne, the living creatures, and the elders; and the number of them
was ten thousand times ten thousand, and thousands of thousands, saying
with a loud voice: “Worthy is the Lamb who was slain to receive power
and riches and wisdom, and strength and honor and glory and blessing!”
And every creature which is in heaven and on the earth and under the
earth and such as are in the sea, and all that are in them, I heard
saying: “Blessing and honor and glory and power be to Him who sits on
the throne, and to the Lamb, forever and ever!” Revelation 5:6-13
