The Goodness of God
Note: The goodness of God is grace and compassion.
So, the LORD said to Moses, “I will also do this thing that you have
spoken; for you have found grace in My sight, and I know you by name.”
And he said, “Please, show me Your glory.” Then He said, “I will make
all My goodness pass before you, and I will proclaim the name of the
LORD before you. I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and I
will have compassion on whom I will have compassion.” But He said, “You
cannot see My face; for no man shall see Me, and live.” Exodus 33:17-20
Note: God abounds in goodness.
So, he cut two tablets of stone like the first ones. Then Moses rose
early in the morning and went up Mount Sinai, as the LORD had commanded
him; and he took in his hand the two tablets of stone. Now the LORD
descended in the cloud and stood with him there and proclaimed the name
of the LORD. And the LORD passed before him and proclaimed, “The LORD,
the LORD God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abounding in
goodness and truth, keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and
transgression and sin, by no means clearing the guilty, visiting the
iniquity of the fathers upon the children and the children’s children
to the third and the fourth generation.” Exodus 34:4-7
Note: God showed goodness to Israel according to His lovingkindness.
I will mention the lovingkindnesses of the LORD and the praises of the
LORD, according to all that the LORD has bestowed on us, and the great
goodness toward the house of Israel, which He has bestowed on them
according to His mercies, according to the multitude of His
lovingkindnesses. Isaiah 63:7
Note: Israel will stream to the goodness of God and be satisfied.
“For the LORD has redeemed Jacob and ransomed him from the hand of one
stronger than he. Therefore, they shall come and sing in the height of
Zion, streaming to the goodness of the LORD— For wheat and new wine and
oil, for the young of the flock and the herd; Their souls shall be like
a well-watered garden, and they shall sorrow no more at all. Then shall
the virgin rejoice in the dance, and the young men and the old,
together; For I will turn their mourning to joy, will comfort them, and
make them rejoice rather than sorrow. I will satiate the soul of the
priests with abundance, and My people shall be satisfied with My
goodness, says the LORD.” Jeremiah 31:11-14
Note: Israel will fear the goodness of God in the latter days.
For the children of Israel shall abide many days without king or
prince, without sacrifice or sacred pillar, without ephod or teraphim.
Afterward the children of Israel shall return and seek the LORD their
God and David their king. They shall fear the LORD and His goodness in
the latter days. Hosea 3:4-5
Note: The goodness of God will establish believers forever.
“Now, O LORD God, the word which You have spoken concerning Your
servant and concerning his house, establish it forever and do as You
have said. So let Your name be magnified forever, saying, ‘The LORD of
hosts is the God over Israel.’ And let the house of Your servant David
be established before You. For You, O LORD of hosts, God of Israel,
have revealed this to Your servant, saying, ‘I will build you a house.’
Therefore, Your servant has found it in his heart to pray this prayer
to You. And now, O Lord GOD, You are God, and Your words are true, and
You have promised this goodness to Your servant.” 2 Samuel 7:25-28
“And now, O LORD, the word which You have spoken concerning Your
servant and concerning his house, let it be established forever, and do
as You have said. So let it be established, that Your name may be
magnified forever, saying, ‘The LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, is
Israel’s God.’ And let the house of Your servant David be established
before You. For You, O my God, have revealed to Your servant that You
will build him a house. Therefore, Your servant has found it in his
heart to pray before You. And now, LORD, You are God, and have promised
this goodness to Your servant. Now You have been pleased to bless the
house of Your servant, that it may continue before You forever; for You
have blessed it, O LORD, and it shall be blessed forever.” 1 Chronicles
17:23-27
Note: Believers will rejoice in the goodness of God.
“Now therefore, Arise, O LORD God, to Your resting place, You and the
ark of Your strength. Let Your priests, O LORD God, be clothed with
salvation, and let Your saints rejoice in goodness. O LORD God, do not
turn away the face of Your Anointed; Remember the mercies of Your
servant David.” 2 Chronicles 6:41-42
Note: God pours out blessings of goodness upon believers.
The king shall have joy in Your strength, O LORD; And in Your salvation
how greatly shall he rejoice! You have given him his heart’s desire and
have not withheld the request of his lips. For You meet him with the
blessings of goodness; You set a crown of pure gold upon his head.
Psalms 21:1-3
Note: The goodness of God will follow believers during their lifetime.
The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me to lie down in
green pastures; He leads me beside the still waters. He restores my
soul; He leads me in the paths of righteousness for His name’s sake.
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will
fear no evil; For You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they
comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my
enemies; You anoint my head with oil; My cup runs over. Surely goodness
and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life; And I will dwell in
the house of the LORD forever. Psalms 23
Note: Believers will rely on the goodness of God.
Remember, O LORD, Your tender mercies and Your lovingkindnesses, for
they are from of old. Do not remember the sins of my youth, nor my
transgressions; According to Your mercy remember me, for Your goodness’
sake, O LORD. Psalms 25:6-7
Note: The goodness of God gives believers hope.
Teach me Your way, O LORD, and lead me in a smooth path, because of my
enemies. Do not deliver me to the will of my adversaries; For false
witnesses have risen against me, and such as breathe out violence. I
would have lost heart, unless I had believed that I would see the
goodness of the LORD
In the land of the living. Psalms 27:11-13
Note: Believers have repented of their sins due to the goodness of God.
Therefore, you are inexcusable, O man, whoever you are who judge, for
in whatever you judge another you condemn yourself; for you who judge
practice the same things. But we know that the judgment of God is
according to truth against those who practice such things. And do you
think this, O man, you who judge those practicing such things, and
doing the same, that you will escape the judgment of God? Or do you
despise the riches of His goodness, forbearance, and longsuffering, not
knowing that the goodness of God leads you to repentance? Romans 2:1-4
Note: Believers consider the goodness of God through faith.
You will say then, “Branches were broken off that I might be grafted
in.” Well said. Because of unbelief they were broken off, and you stand
by faith. Do not be haughty, but fear. For if God did not spare the
natural branches, He may not spare you either. Therefore, consider the
goodness and severity of God: on those who fell, severity; but toward
you, goodness, if you continue in His goodness. Otherwise, you also
will be cut off. And they also, if they do not continue in unbelief,
will be grafted in, for God is able to graft them in again. Romans
11:19-23
Note: Believers will reflect the goodness of God.
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering,
kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against
such there is no law. And those who are Christ’s have crucified the
flesh with its passions and desires. If we live in the Spirit, let us
also walk in the Spirit. Galatians 5:22-25
For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as
children of light (for the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness,
righteousness, and truth), finding out what is acceptable to the Lord.
And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but
rather expose them. Ephesians 5:8-11
Note: Believers reflect the goodness of God by glorifying Jesus Christ.
Therefore, we also pray always for you that our God would count you
worthy of this calling and fulfill all the good pleasure of His
goodness and the work of faith with power, that the name of our Lord
Jesus Christ may be glorified in you, and you in Him, according to the
grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ. 2 Thessalonians 1:11-12
