Humble Yourself Before God
1) Pharaoh never humbled himself before Yahweh.
So, Moses and Aaron came into Pharaoh and said to him, “Thus says the
LORD God of the Hebrews: ‘How long will you refuse to humble yourself
before Me? Let My people go, that they may serve Me. Or else, if you
refuse to let My people go, behold, tomorrow I will bring locusts into
your territory. And they shall cover the face of the earth, so that no
one will be able to see the earth; and they shall eat the residue of
what is left, which remains to you from the hail, and they shall eat
every tree which grows up for you out of the field. Exodus 10:3-5
Note: Egypt was destroyed by plagues.
2) Moses was humble before Yahweh.
Then Miriam and Aaron spoke against Moses because of the Ethiopian
woman whom he had married; for he had married an Ethiopian woman. So
they said, “Has the LORD indeed spoken only through Moses? Has He not
spoken through us also?” And the LORD heard it. (Now the man Moses was
very humble, more than all men who were on the face of the earth.)
Suddenly the LORD said to Moses, Aaron, and Miriam, “Come out, you
three, to the tabernacle of meeting!” So, the three came out. Then the
LORD came down in the pillar of cloud and stood in the door of the
tabernacle and called Aaron and Miriam. And they both went forward.
Then He said, “Hear now My words: If there is a prophet among you, I,
the LORD, make Myself known to him in a vision; I speak to him in a
dream. Not so with My servant Moses; He is faithful in all My house. I
speak with him face to face, even plainly, and not in dark sayings; And
he sees the form of the LORD. Why then were you not afraid to speak
against My servant Moses?” Numbers 12:1-8
Note: God spoke personally to Moses due to his humbleness and faithfulness.
3) Yahweh humbled Israel so they would listen to Him.
“Every commandment which I command you today you must be careful to
observe, that you may live and multiply, and go in and possess the land
of which the LORD swore to your fathers. And you shall remember that
the LORD your God led you all the way these forty years in the
wilderness, to humble you and test you, to know what was in your heart,
whether you would keep His commandments or not. So He humbled you,
allowed you to hunger, and fed you with manna which you did not know
nor did your fathers know, that He might make you know that man shall
not live by bread alone; but man lives by every word that proceeds from
the mouth of the LORD. Your garments did not wear out on you, nor did
your foot swell these forty years. You should know in your heart that
as a man chastens his son, so the LORD your God chastens you.”
Deuteronomy 8:1-5
Note: God will chasten us to get our attention.
4) Yahweh told Solomon how to heal the land.
Then the LORD appeared to Solomon by night and said to him: “I have
heard your prayer and have chosen this place for Myself as a house of
sacrifice. When I shut up heaven and there is no rain, or command the
locusts to devour the land, or send pestilence among My people, if My
people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and
seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from
heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land. 2 Chronicles
7:12-14
Note: The homes, cities, and land of prideful people will be destroyed.
5) Jerusalem and Judah were destroyed due to pride.
Zedekiah was twenty-one years old when he became king, and he reigned
eleven years in Jerusalem. He did evil in the sight of the LORD his
God, and did not humble himself before Jeremiah the prophet, who spoke
from the mouth of the LORD. And he also rebelled against King
Nebuchadnezzar, who had made him swear an oath by God; but he stiffened
his neck and hardened his heart against turning to the LORD God of
Israel. Moreover, all the leaders of the priests and the people
transgressed more and more, according to all the abominations of the
nations, and defiled the house of the LORD which He had consecrated in
Jerusalem. 2 Chronicles 36:11-14
Note: Abominations before God will not go unpunished.
6) The prayer of a humble man will be answered.
Then I proclaimed a fast there at the river of Ahava, that we might
humble ourselves before our God, to seek from Him the right way for us
and our little ones and all our possessions. For I was ashamed to
request of the king an escort of soldiers and horsemen to help us
against the enemy on the road, because we had spoken to the king,
saying, “The hand of our God is upon all those for good who seek Him,
but His power and His wrath are against all those who forsake Him.” So,
we fasted and entreated our God for this, and He answered our prayer.
Ezra 8:21-23
Note: Let us always remember to humble ourselves before God.
7) Humbleness is evidence of salvation.
But the meek shall inherit the earth and shall delight themselves in the abundance of peace. Psalms 37:11
For the LORD takes pleasure in His people; He will beautify the humble with salvation. Psalms 149:43.
“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted. Blessed are
the meek, for they shall inherit the earth. Blessed are those who
hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled. Blessed
are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy.” Matthew 5:3-7
At that time the disciples came to Jesus, saying, “Who then is greatest
in the kingdom of heaven?” Then Jesus called a little child to Him, set
him in the midst of them, and said, “Assuredly, I say to you, unless
you are converted and become as little children, you will by no means
enter the kingdom of heaven. Therefore, whoever humbles himself as this
little child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. Whoever receives
one little child like this in My name receives Me. Matthew 18:1-5
Let love be without hypocrisy. Abhor what is evil. Cling to what is
good. Be kindly affectionate to one another with brotherly love, in
honor giving preference to one another; not lagging in diligence,
fervent in spirit, serving the Lord; rejoicing in hope, patient in
tribulation, continuing steadfastly in prayer; distributing to the
needs of the saints, given to hospitality.
Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse. Rejoice with
those who rejoice, and weep with those who weep. Be of the same mind
toward one another. Do not set your mind on high things, but associate
with the humble. Do not be wise in your own opinion. Romans 12:9-16
Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy; love does not parade
itself, is not puffed up; does not behave rudely, does not seek its
own, is not provoked, thinks no evil; does not rejoice in iniquity, but
rejoices in the truth; bears all things, believes all things, hopes all
things, endures all things. 1 Corinthians 13:4-7
Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, put on tender
mercies, kindness, humility, meekness, longsuffering; bearing with one
another, and forgiving one another, if anyone has a complaint against
another; even as Christ forgave you, so you also must do. But above all
these things put on love, which is the bond of perfection. And let the
peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one
body; and be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in
all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns
and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. And
whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus,
giving thanks to God the Father through Him. Colossians 3:12-17
Note: Let’s sing praises to the Father for our salvation in Jesus Christ!
