Mary
the Sinner per Scripture
1) All humans are sinful who have
had a natural father.
But now the righteousness of God
apart from the law is revealed, being witnessed by the
Law and the Prophets, even the righteousness of God, through
faith in Jesus Christ, to all and on all who believe.
For there is no difference; for all have sinned and
fall short of the glory of God, being
justified freely by His grace through the redemption
that is in Christ Jesus, whom God set
forth as a propitiation by His blood, through
faith, to demonstrate His righteousness, because in His forbearance
God had passed over the sins that were previously
committed, to demonstrate at the present time His righteousness,
that He might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in
Jesus. Romans 3:21-26
Therefore, just as through one
man sin entered the world, and death through sin, and thus death
spread to all men, because all sinned— (For until the law sin was
in the world, but sin is not imputed when there is no
law. Nevertheless, death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over
those who had not sinned according to the likeness of the
transgression of Adam, who is a type of Him who was to come.
Romans 5:12-14
2) Like Zacharias the sinner, Mary was troubled at the sight
of the angel Gabriel.
And when Zacharias saw him, he was troubled, and fear fell upon him. Luke 1:12
And
the angel answered and said to him, "I am Gabriel, who stands in the
presence of God, and was sent to speak to you and bring you these glad
tidings." Luke 1:19
Now in the sixth month the angel
Gabriel was sent by God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth, to a
virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of
David. The virgin’s name was Mary. And having come in,
the angel said to her, “Rejoice, highly
favored one, the Lord is with you;
blessed are you among women!” But when she
saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and considered what
manner of greeting this was. Luke 1:27-29
3) Mary proclaimed her need of a
Savior since she was a sinner.
And Mary said: “My soul magnifies
the Lord, and my spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior.” Luke
1:46-47
4) Mary acknowledged her sinfulness
by performing the purification command.
Now when the days of her
purification according to the law of Moses were completed, they
brought Him to Jerusalem to present Him to the Lord (as
it is written in the law of the Lord, “Every male who opens the
womb shall be called holy to the Lord”), and to offer a
sacrifice according to what is said in the law of the Lord, “A
pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons.” Luke 2:22-24
5) Mary lied about who was the
father of Jesus Christ.
Now so it was that after
three days they found Him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the
teachers, both listening to them and asking them
questions. And all who heard Him were astonished at His
understanding and answers. So, when they saw Him, they were
amazed; and His mother said to Him, “Son, why have You done this to
us? Look, Your father and I have sought You anxiously.” Luke 2:46-48
6) Mary like Joseph did not
understand the purpose of Jesus Christ.
And He said to them, “Why did you
seek Me? Did you not know that I must be about My Father’s
business?” But they did not understand the statement which
He spoke to them. Luke 2:49-50
7) Mary and Joseph did have sex
after the birth of Jesus Christ.
Now the birth of Jesus Christ was
as follows: After His mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, before they
came together, she was found with child of the Holy
Spirit. Matthew 1:18
8) Mary and Joseph had children
after the birth of Jesus Christ.
When He had come to His own country,
He taught them in their synagogue, so that they were astonished and
said, “Where did this Man get this wisdom
and these mighty works? Is this not the carpenter’s
son? Is not His mother called Mary? And His
brothers James, Joses, Simon, and Judas? And His
sisters, are they not all with us? Where then did
this Man get all these things?” Matthew 13:54-56
9) Mary tried to stop the ministry
of Jesus Christ.
Then His brothers and His mother came,
and standing outside they sent to Him, calling Him. And a
multitude was sitting around Him; and they said to Him, “Look, Your
mother and Your brothers are outside seeking You.” Mark 3:31-32
10) Mary was not in the will of God
during the ministry of Jesus Christ.
But He answered them,
saying, “Who is My mother, or My brothers?” And He looked
around in a circle at those who sat about Him, and said, “Here
are My mother and My brothers! For whoever does the will of
God is My brother and My sister and mother.” Mark 3:33-35
11) Mary and her sons became
believers after the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
Then they returned to Jerusalem from
the mount called Olivet, which is near Jerusalem, a Sabbath day’s
journey. And when they had entered, they went up into the
upper room where they were staying: Peter, James, John, and
Andrew; Philip and Thomas; Bartholomew and Matthew; James the
son of Alphaeus and Simon the Zealot;
and Judas the son of James. These all continued
with one accord in prayer and supplication, with the
women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with His brothers. Acts
1:12-14
12) Mary was known as a woman born under the law for one specific purpose only.
But
when the fullness of the time had come, God sent forth His Son, born of
a woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law,
that we might receive the adoption as sons. Galatians 4:4-5
Note: Cyril of Alexandria declared that Mary was holy.
Cyril sent a letter to Nestorius known as "The Third Epistle of Saint
Cyril to Nestorius." This epistle drew heavily on the established
Patristic Constitutions and contained the most famous article of
Alexandrian Orthodoxy: "The Twelve Anathemas of Saint Cyril." In these
anathemas, Cyril excommunicated anyone who followed the teachings of
Nestorius. For example, "Anyone who dares to deny the Holy Virgin
the title Theotokos is Anathema!" His writings include the homily given
in Ephesus and several other sermons. In several writings, Cyril
focuses on the love of Jesus to his mother. On the Cross, he overcomes
his pain and thinks of his mother. At the wedding in Cana, he bows to
her wishes. Cyril created the basis for all other mariological
developments through his teaching of the blessed Virgin Mary, as the
"Mother of God." Wikipedia Encyclopedia
Note: Would Cyril of Alexandria consider Luke a heretic?
These all continued
with one accord in prayer and supplication, with the
women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with His brothers. Acts
1:12-14
