WATCHTOWER - SEPTEMBER 1, 1999

Page 4: When people die, "they are conscious of nothing at all." They do not have spirits that survive death. They are asleep in the grave, where "there is no work nor devising nor knowledge nor wisdom." (Ecclesiastes 9:5, 10)

Correction: Jesus disagrees with the misinterpretation of Ecclesiastes by the Watch Tower.

Mark 12:26-27 "But concerning the dead, that they rise, have you not read in the book of Moses, in the burning bush passage, how God spoke to him, saying, 'I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob'? He is not the God of the dead, but the God of the living. You are therefore greatly mistaken."

Page 4: James 4:7 says: "Oppose the Devil, and he will flee from you." Yes, God can protect his faithful ones from witchcraft and any other uncanny power. That is one implication of Jesus' words: "The truth will set you free." - John 8:32.

Correction: Your love for Jesus will set you free from the Pharisees of the Watch Tower.

John 8:42 Jesus said to them, "If God were your Father, you would love Me, for I proceeded forth and came from God; nor have I come of Myself, but He sent Me."

Page 4: Eventually, Job's suffering ended, and Jehovah rewarded him richly for his integrity.

Correction: God accepted Job for his repentance and correctly proclaiming God.

Job 42:6-7 "Therefore I abhor myself, and repent in dust and ashes." And so it was, after the LORD had spoken these words to Job, that the LORD said to Eliphaz the Temanite, "My wrath is aroused against you and your two friends, for you have not spoken of Me what is right, as My servant Job has."

Pages 4-5: The principles proved by Job's integrity have long since been recorded in the Bible and are evident to all. There is no need for another such test case.

Correction: The Watch Tower forgot about the apostle Paul.

2 Corinthians 12:7-9 And lest I should be exalted above measure by the abundance of the revelations, a thorn in the flesh was given to me, a messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I be exalted above measure. Concerning this thing I pleaded with the Lord three times that it might depart from me. And He said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness." Therefore most gladly I will rather boast in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.

Page 5: In this way Satan took advantage of Job's weakened state to try to discourage him and shake his confidence in Jehovah's righteousness. Yet, Job continued to lean on Jehovah as his only hope. - Compare Psalm 55:22.

Note: True Christians lean on Jesus as our hope.

1 Timothy 1:1 Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ, by the commandment of God our Savior and the Lord Jesus Christ, our hope,

Page 6: But many superstitious individuals who could be healed go to a medical doctor only when it is too late. They try spiritistic healing methods first, and when these fail they go to a doctor as a last resort. Many die unnecessarily.

Note: To combat superstitions, churches of Christendom have established numerous hospitals.

Page 7: Indeed, Jehovah has wonderful things in store for those who exercise faith in him. We just need to be patient and endure.

Note: True Christians place their faith in Jesus Christ.

Galatians 3:26 For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus.

Page 8: What a dramatic contrast there is between most of today's youths and the wholesome young ones found in congregations of Jehovah's Witnesses!

Note: The Watch Tower contradicts itself!

Page 12: Sad to say, some Christian youths have engaged in similar wild partying. When a group of Christian youths were asked to describe what goes on at youth nightclubs, one young sister said: "Fights happen all the time. I've found myself in the middle of them." Added a young brother: "Drinking, smoking, things like that." Another young brother admitted: "People get drunk. They act like idiots! And there are drugs. A lot of bad things happen. If you go there and think you won't be affected, you're wrong."

Page 8: But as a group, these young ones have taken a courageous stand for what is right and have refused to give in to the world's pressures. We wholeheartedly commend all of you young ones who are winning the war against Satan's "crafty acts"! (Ephesians 6:11)

Correction: True Christians rely on Jesus Christ.

John 15:5 "I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing."

Page 8: Nevertheless, to continue winning your battle against the wicked one, you must strenuously resist what the Bible calls, "the spirit of the world." (1 Corinthians 2:12)

Correction: True Christians rely on Jesus Christ.

Ephesians 6:10 Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might.

Page 9: Before learning the Christian way, Christians in Ephesus had been unwitting followers of "the ruler of the authority of the air," Satan the Devil.

Correction: True Christians do not learn a way of life, but place their trust in Jesus.

Ephesians 1:13-14 In Him you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation; in whom also, having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, to the praise of His glory.

Page 13: Yes, with Jehovah's help, you can avoid being contaminated by the world's spirit! (1 Peter 5:10) Nevertheless, Satan often camouflages his lethal traps, and it can sometimes take real discernment to sense danger.

Note: True Christians rely on the Holy Spirit for help.

John 14:16-17 "And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever; the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you."

1 Corinthians 2:13 These things we also speak, not in words which man's wisdom teaches but which the Holy Spirit teaches, comparing spiritual things with spiritual.

Page 14: Next, try to determine which Bible laws or principles bear on the subject. (Proverbs 3:5) To do this, of course, you must have a knowledge of the Bible. That is why Paul encourages us to take in "solid food" - to learn "the breadth and length and height and dept" of the truth. - Ephesians 3:18.

Note: The truth is Jesus Christ.

Eph 4:21 if indeed you have heard Him and have been taught by Him, as the truth is in Jesus:

Page 14: Armed with a knowledge of Jehovah's principles, you will more easily make "sure of what is acceptable to the Lord." (Ephesians 5:10)

Note: True Christians are forgiving since God in Christ forgave them.

Ephesians 4:32 And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God in Christ forgave you.

Page 14: Yet what if you are not certain of the wise course to take in a particular situation? Pray to Jehovah for direction. (Psalm 19:144)

Note: True Christians pray to the Father.

Matthew 6:6 "But you, when you pray, go into your room, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly."

Note: True Christians pray in the name of Son.

John 16:23 "And in that day you will ask Me nothing. Most assuredly, I say to you, whatever you ask the Father in My name He will give you."

Note: True Christians pray in the Holy Spirit.

Romans 8:26 Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.

Page 16: Have you and your parents discussed your future? Perhaps you plan to enter the full-time ministry as a pioneer. Really, no career choice could bring greater satisfaction. If you are cultivating good study habits and developing skills in the ministry, you are preparing for this exciting career.

Note: True Christians will be ministers of Jesus Christ.

Romans 15:15-16 Nevertheless, brethren, I have written more boldly to you on some points, as reminding you, because of the grace given to me by God, that I might be a minister of Jesus Christ to the Gentiles, ministering the gospel of God, that the offering of the Gentiles might be acceptable, sanctified by the Holy Spirit.

Page 16: Planning ahead in this way so as to care for adult responsibilities and especially so as to be able to share in the pioneer service over the long term is not incompatible with putting God's Kingdom first. (Matthew 6:33)

Correction: True Christians put Jesus Christ first.

Colossians 1:18 And He is the head of the body, the church, who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in all things He may have the preeminence.

Page 18: The psalmist David prayed: "You are my hope, O Sovereign Lord Jehovah, my confidence from my youth. O God, you have taught me from my youth. O God, you have taught me from my youth on, and until now I keep telling about your wonderful works."(Psalm 71:5,17)

Note: True Christians place their hope in Jesus Christ.

Colossians 1:27 To them God willed to make known what are the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles: which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.

Page 18: Thousands of young ones like you have taken a courageous stand and now serve as baptized publishers of the good news.

Note: The "good news" is about Jesus Christ.

1 Corinthians 15:1-4 Moreover, brethren, I declare to you the good news which I preached to you, which also you received and in which you stand, by which also you are saved, if you hold fast that word which I preached to you; unless you believed in vain. For I delivered to you first of all that which I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures,

Page 19: Real success is found in pleasing God - including following the law of Jehovah. Only this can bring real satisfaction and genuine happiness!

Correction: Real spiritual success is found in serving Jesus Christ.

Rom 14:18 For he who serves Christ in these things is acceptable to God and approved by men.

Page 19: Perhaps the idea of being under Jehovah's law and being told what to do does not sound appealing. Yet Jesus said: "Happy are those conscious of their spiritual need."

Correction: True Christians are no longer under the law.

Galatians 3:24-25 Therefore the law was our tutor to bring us to Christ, that we might be justified by faith. But after faith has come, we are no longer under a tutor.

Page 19: Whether you realize it or not, you were created with spiritual needs - including a deep-seated need to know God and to understand his purposes. Therefore, you can experience true happiness only if you fill those needs and follow "the law of Jehovah."

Correction: True Christians know God since they know both the Father and the Son.

John 14:7 "If you had known Me, you would have known My Father also; and from now on you know Him and have seen Him."

Pages 19-20: At Revelation 4:11, the Bible says: "You are worthy, Jehovah, even our God, to receive the glory and the honor and the power, because you created all things, and because of your will they existed and were created." As our Creator, Jehovah is "the source of life."

Note: Jesus Christ is the Creator.

Colossians 1:16 For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him.

Page 20: How can you make your life a success and "reap everlasting life"?

Answer: Put your sincere faith and trust into Jesus Christ.

John 3:15 "that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life."

Page 21: When the criminal implored Jesus, "Remember me when you get into your kingdom," he wanted Jesus to do more than recall his name. He wanted Jesus to act, to resurrect him!

Correction: He wanted to be with Jesus Christ beyond this lifetime.

Luke 23:43 And Jesus said to him, "Assuredly, I say to you, today you will be with Me in Paradise."

Page 21: When you contrast their life of so-called pleasure with the narrow way you must walk as a Christian, you might sometimes feel "envious of the boasters." (Matthew 7:13, 14)

Note: The narrow way to eternal life is Jesus Christ.

John 14:6 Jesus said to him, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me."

Page 22: As for the rest, unless they change their ways, they will in the near future face "the revelation of the Lord Jesus from heaven with his powerful angels in a flaming fire, as he brings vengeance upon those who do not know God and those who do not obey the good news about our Lord Jesus." - 2 Thessalonians 1:7, 8.

Note: The "good news" is about Jesus Christ.

Page 24: The psalmist further describes the successful man as being "like a tree planted by streams of water." The streams of water may have referred to irrigation ditches that were used to water trees in orchards. (Isaiah 44:4)

Note: True Christians have already come to Jesus Christ.

John 7:37-38 On the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, "If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink. He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water."

Page 24: Having learned Jehovah's thinking, you will have the wisdom you need to make wise decisions.

Note: True Christians will have the mind of Christ.

1 Corinthians 2:16 For "who has known the mind of the LORD that he may instruct Him?" But we have the mind of Christ.

Page 26: As expected, the clergy instigated a wave of persecution. The first time that I was arrested, I was sentenced to 20 days in prison. Soon after being released, I was arrested again and sentenced to one month of imprisonment. When a judge demanded that we stop preaching, we replied with the words of Acts 5:29: "We must obey God as ruler rather than men."

Note: True Christians suffer for the name of Jesus.

Matthew 24:9 "Then they will deliver you up to tribulation and kill you, and you will be hated by all nations for My name's sake."

Acts 5:40-42 And they agreed with him, and when they had called for the apostles and beaten them, they commanded that they should not speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go. So they departed from the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer shame for His name. And daily in the temple, and in every house, they did not cease teaching and preaching Jesus as the Christ.
