WATCHTOWER - NOVEMBER 15, 1996

Page 6: Both Catholic and Protestant churches recognize Lent, although the manner of observing it differs from church to church. Some eat just one meal a day during the full 40-day period preceding Easter.

Correction: Not all churches recognize Lent nor is it the full 40-day period before Easter.

Lent is the 40 weekdays from Ash Wednesday to Easter observed by the Roman Catholic, Eastern, and some Protestant churches as a period of penitence and fasting.

Page 6: There is something to be learned from Jesus' fasting after his baptism. He was embarking on a vital ministry. The vindication of Jehovah's sovereignty and the future of the entire human race were involved.

Correction: Jesus Christ was declaring His true nature.

Luke 4:8 And Jesus answered and said to him, "Get behind Me, Satan! For it is written, 'You shall worship the LORD (YHWH) your God ('elohim), and Him only you shall serve.'"

Romans 1:1 Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle, separated to the gospel of God.

Page 9: You too can serve Jehovah with constancy. Are you a young person? Then act now to develop a pattern of constancy by rejecting this world's bad association and corrupting conduct. If you have been serving God for some time, maintain a pattern of faithful endurance. Do not give up, for each trial we face gives us an opportunity to show Jehovah that we are determined to serve him with constancy.

Note: You too can serve Jesus Christ through faith.

Philippians 1:1 Paul and Timothy, servants of Jesus Christ, To all the saints in Christ Jesus who are in Philippi, with the bishops and deacons.

James 1:1 James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, To the twelve tribes which are scattered abroad: Greetings.

Jude 1:1 Jude, a servant of Jesus Christ, and brother of James, To those who are called, sanctified by God the Father, and preserved in Jesus Christ.

Page 10: In the first century C.E., Christian congregations were visited by such overseers as Paul and Barnabas. These faithful men had the objective of 'building up' the congregations. (2 Corinthians 10:8) Today, we are blessed with thousands of men who are doing this in a systematic way. The Governing Body of Jehovah's Witnesses has appointed them as circuit and district overseers.

Correction: Paul and Barnabas were not sent by the governing body in Jerusalem but the Holy Spirit from the church at Antioch.

Acts 13:1-4 Now in the church that was at Antioch there were certain prophets and teachers: Barnabas, Simeon who was called Niger, Lucius of Cyrene, Manaen who had been brought up with Herod the tetrarch, and Saul. As they ministered to the Lord and fasted, the Holy Spirit said, "Now separate to Me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them." Then, having fasted and prayed, and laid hands on them, they sent them away. So, being sent out by the Holy Spirit, they went down to Seleucia, and from there they sailed to Cyprus.

Page 14: Present-day traveling overseers receive spiritual instruction through the Scriptures and the publications of the "the faithful and discreet slave," as do all other Christians.

Note: We need to read the Holy Bible first and foremost.

Psalm 119:105 Your word is a lamp to my feet And a light to my path.

Page 14: Yes, traveling elders must continue to feed at Jehovah's spiritual table. They must be well acquainted with the methods and guidelines followed by God's organization. Then such men can be a real blessing to others.

Correction: Elders must know the Bible not guidelines from a organization.

Psalm 119:11 Your word I have hidden in my heart, That I might not sin against You!

Correction: One must have the mind of Christ to be a blessing to others.

1 Corinthians 2:16 For "who has known the mind of the LORD that he may instruct Him?" But we have the mind of Christ.

Page 15: Because of his blessing and under the supervision of the Governing Body, this work has been expanded and refined over the years.

Correction: God never shares His glory.

Isa 42:8 I am the LORD (YHWH), that is My name; And My glory I will not give to another, Nor My praise to carved images.

Page 16: One brother who was a traveling overseer for many years emphasized the need for reliance on God, stating: "Always look to Jehovah in handling problems, and seek the aid of his organization."

Correction: Christians need to look to Jesus.

Hebrews 12:1-2 Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

Page 21: So, then, what is the divine purpose for our time? What is God's will for those who love him?

Page 21-22: Therefore, we need to seize every opportunity to preach the good news of the Kingdom and make disciples. (Matthew 25:19, 20)

Correction: We are to be witnesses of Jesus Christ.

Acts 1:8 "But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth."

Page 25: Impartiality-where can it be found? There is One who is totally impartial, free from prejudice, favoritism, and discrimination. He is Jehovah God, the Creator of mankind.

Note: Jesus Christ must be Jehovah!

Isaiah 44:24 Thus says the LORD, your Redeemer, And He who formed you from the womb: "I am the LORD, who makes all things, Who stretches out the heavens all alone, Who spreads abroad the earth by Myself.

John 1:3 All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made.

Page 25: Jehovah is a perfect example of impartiality. From the opening pages of the Bible, we read how he manifested his impartiality in his dealings with humans.

Note: All people are treated the same by God.

Romans 2:11 For there is no partiality with God.

Page 25: In all his dealings with the human family, Jehovah has consistently demonstrated his impartiality. Christ Jesus said of his Father: "He makes his sun rise upon wicked people and good and makes it rain upon righteous people and unrighteous." (Matthew 5:45)

Note: Since God is impartial, we have the same hope as the apostle Paul!

2 Timothy 4:18 And the Lord will deliver me from every evil work and preserve me for His heavenly kingdom. To Him be glory forever and ever. Amen!

Page 26: What an excellent example of Jehovah's impartiality! In these critical last days, it moves God's servants to proclaim the good news of the Kingdom with the same impariality.

Correction: We are to preach Jesus Christ!

1 Corinthians 1:23 But we preach Christ crucified, to the Jews a stumbling block and to the Greeks foolishness.

Page 27: Favoritism is an enemy of impartiality and violates the principles of love and unity. Jesus appealed to the poor, the weak, and the lowly, and he made their load light. (Matthew 11:28-30) He stood out in sharp contrast to the Jewish religious leaders, who lorded it over the people, burdening them with a heavy load of rules. (Luke 11:45, 46)

Note: The Watchtower organization places a heavy load of rules on elders today.

Page 14: They must be well acquainted with the methods and guidelines followed by God's organization.

Page 29: Bible prophecy indicates that Jesus has already been enthroned as heavenly King in the Messianic Kingdom.

Correction: Jesus Christ will rule after the enemies of God have been conquered.

Hebrews 1:13 But to which of the angels has He ever said: "Sit at My right hand, Till I make Your enemies Your footstool"?

Page 29: Since he is invisible, we need a sign to help us discern his rulership, which marked the start of the last days of this wicked system of things. Do you recognize the sign?

Correction: The sign of Christ reigning in our hearts is the Holy Spirit!

John 14:26 "But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you."

Page 29: Apart from chronological proof, more than 20 different features of the last days pinpoint the beginning of the Messiah's reign in 1914. - See The Watchtower of March 1, 1993, page 5.

Note: The date 1914 is based on the bogus date of 607 BCE for the fall of Jerusalem.
