BYU professor says cleaner air allows people to live longer
Bad air (Bill Brussard, ABC 4 News)
PROVO, Utah (ABC 4
News)- A BYU professor says you're going to live longer thanks to cleaner air.
That may be hard to believe when you look out your window and see that inversion
that is hanging around the Salt Lake Valley.
BYU epidemiologist Arden Pope says our air in this country is better than it was
20 years ago. He's the lead author on a study that he conducted with the Harvard
School of Public
Health. He says despite the inversion, which he calls temporary, Americans
are living five more months because of cleaner air. Arden says, “Our public
policy effort to improve our air quality seems to be paying off."
Arden says one reason for the cleaner air is better emission standards for cars,
truck, and buses. The study will be in the January 22 issue of the New England
Journal of Medicine.
