Islamic cleric likens Muslims' persecution in UK to that of Jews in Nazi Germany
Edinburgh, Feb 3 (ANI):
An Islamic leader here has claimed that the arrest of nine terrorist suspects in
Birmingham in early morning raids at their homes a couple of days ago had proved
that Muslims in Britain were being "persecuted" like Jews in Nazi Germany.
He said that terror arrests were an example of the government justifying its
political agenda and anti-terrorism laws. "This is a persecuting course of
action that the government has taken. They have invented this perception of a
threat. To justify that, they have to maintain incidents to prove something is
going on," The Scotsman quoted him as saying
Dr Mohammad Naseem, the chairman of Birmingham Central Mosque, said that Britain
was becoming a police state, and said the government was picking on the Muslim
community to pursue political goals.
Speaking before Friday prayers, Dr Naseem said, "Muslims are persecuted
unjustly. The German people were told Jews were a threat. The same is happening
here."
His remarks came as West Midlands Police investigating an alleged kidnap plot
began questioning the men held under the Terrorism Act, reported The Scotsman.
Assistant Chief Constable David Shaw sought to reassure the community that they
were not targeting "Muslims" but trying to pursue criminals. "Despite certain
labels given to those men by the media, what we are dealing with here in its
purest sense is criminality," he said and added that he believed Dr Naseem was
"wrong". (ANI)
