MELBOURNE MUSLIM CLERIC HATE

Controversial cleric meets ASIO often

July 27, 2005 - 6:14AM

Controversial Melbourne Muslim cleric Mohammed Omran says he has regular meetings with an Australian Security Intelligence Organisation (ASIO) official.

The Melbourne sheikh caused a storm of public outrage this week when he described terrorist leader Osama bin Laden as a good man.

The cleric on Tuesday night backed away from his comments, saying he had no hesitation in condemning bin Laden if he was behind terrorist attacks.

But he's now told Fairfax newspapers he has official meetings with the Victorian head of ASIO.

"We meet every once a month, sometimes (every) two weeks, and if there are difficulties we need to meet once a week," Sheik Omran said.

He believed there was no current threat to Australia.

"I pray that I am right," he said.
