FORGIVENESS
Note:
When we sin against people we are also sinning against God.
Psalm 51:1-4
Have mercy upon me, O God, according to Your lovingkindness; According
to the multitude of Your tender mercies, blot out my transgressions.
Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. For I
acknowledge my transgressions, and my sin is always before me.
Against You, You only, have I sinned, and done this evil in Your
sight; That You may be found just when You speak, and blameless when You
judge.
Note:
Repentance involves confession of our sins to God.
Psalm 32:5 I
acknowledged my sin to You, and my iniquity I have not hidden. I said,
"I will confess my transgressions to the LORD," and You forgave
the iniquity of my sin.
1 John 1:9
If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins
and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
Note:
Forgiveness of others indicates that our sins have been forgiven by God.
Matthew 6:12
"And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors."
Matthew
6:14-15 "For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly
Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive men
their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses."
Note:
We should forgive repentant people who sin against us personally.
Matthew
18:21-22 Then Peter came to Him and said, "Lord, how often shall my
brother sin against me, and I forgive him? Up to seven times?" Jesus
said to him, "I do not say to you, up to seven times, but up to
seventy times seven."
Luke 17:3-4
"Take heed to yourselves. If your brother sins against you, rebuke him;
and if he repents, forgive him. And if he sins against you seven
times in a day, and seven times in a day returns to you, saying, 'I
repent,' you shall forgive him."
Note:
We should forgive repentant people as Jesus Christ forgave us.
Matthew 9:2-6
Then behold, they brought to Him a paralytic lying on a bed. When Jesus
saw their faith, He said to the paralytic, "Son, be of good cheer;
your sins are forgiven you." And at once some of the scribes said
within themselves, "This Man blasphemes!" But Jesus, knowing their
thoughts, said, "Why do you think evil in your hearts? For which is
easier, to say, 'Your sins are forgiven you,' or to say, 'Arise and
walk'? But that you may know that the Son of Man has power on earth to
forgive sins"; then He said to the paralytic, "Arise, take up your bed,
and go to your house."
Colossians
3:12-13 Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, put on tender
mercies, kindness, humility, meekness, longsuffering; bearing with one
another, and forgiving one another, if anyone has a complaint against
another; even as Christ forgave you, so you also must do.
Ephesians
4:32 And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one
another, just as God in Christ forgave you.
Conclusion:
Are we aware when we are sinning it is also against God? Are we
confessing our sins to God? Are we forgiving repentive people who sin
against us on a continual basis? Have we been forgiven of our sins by
God and specifically by Jesus Christ?
