PROPHET GORDON B. HINCKLEY

Talk Given on 11/13/98 at Minges Coliseum, North Carolina

Note: The opening hymn was LDS hymn #27 titled "Praise to the Man" which glorifies Joseph Smith. One of the closing LDS hymns was "We Thank Thee, O God, For A Prophet."

The Prophet, Gordon B. Hinckley especially wanted to thank those who had been so kind to them during their visit. He related that when they came to their hotel room they found roses, shrimp, and oysters. He commented that it was the first time he had eated raw oysters and that they were not that bad as long as he closed his eyes while he ate them.

Note: Since Gordon loves the "Word of Wisdom" or Mormon dietary laws, he should start reading the Holy Bible.

Leviticus 11:10-12 But all in the seas or in the rivers that do not have fins and scales, all that move in the water or any living thing which is in the water, they are an abomination to you. They shall be an abomination to you; you shall not eat their flesh, but you shall regard their carcasses as an abomination. Whatever in the water does not have fins or scales; that shall be an abomination to you.

The Prophet announced that a temple would be built in Raleigh, North Carolina. He said that he was looking forward to the dedication of the temple about a year from now.

Correction: God does not use temples for us to worship Him.

Hebrews 9:11 But Christ came as High Priest of the good things to come, with the greater and more perfect tabernacle not made with hands, that is, not of this creation.

The Prophet then personally addressed the youth of the Church. He said that we can help people on their road to the celestial glory.

Correction: Without the Holy Spirit no spiritual help can be given to people in need.

John 14:26 "But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you. "

He testified that when God said that everyone needs to be baptized that includes everyone.

Correction: God never said for everyone to be baptized but to exercise sincere belief in Jesus.

John 3:16 "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life."

John 6:40 "And this is the will of Him who sent Me, that everyone who sees the Son and believes in Him may have everlasting life; and I will raise him up at the last day."

Note: The Apostle Paul was not concerned about baptism.

1 Corinthians 1:17-18 For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the gospel, not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of no effect. For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.

The Prophet pleaded with us to do nothing that would keep us from the temple. He wanted us to live for it. He listed each thing that we should avoid in our lives in order to keep worthy.

Correction: True Christians live for Jesus Christ.

Philippians 1:21 For to me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain.

2 Timothy 3:12 Yes, and all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution.

The Prophet then addressed the adults. He wanted all adults to be temple worthy, get recommends, and go to the House of the Lord.

Correction: God does not neccessarily meet you in a building.

Matthew 24:1-2 Then Jesus went out and departed from the temple, and His disciples came up to show Him the buildings of the temple. And Jesus said to them, "Do you not see all these things? Assuredly, I say to you, not one stone shall be left here upon another, that shall not be thrown down."

Luke 23:45 Then the sun was darkened, and the veil of the temple was torn in two.

1 Corinthians 3:16 Do you not know that you are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you?

The Prophet also taught that those who do the will of God will know His doctrine. He said that this is a way to get your testimony. Do you have a testimony of our divine mission? Do you have a testimony of Joseph Smith and his First Vision?

Correction: True Christians have a testimony about Jesus Christ not doctrins of a church.

1 Corinthians 2:1-2 And I, brethren, when I came to you, did not come with excellence of speech or of wisdom declaring to you the testimony of God. For I determined not to know anything among you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified.

The Prophet then told us to believe in the sure knowledge that prophets talk to God.

Correction: God does not talk to prophets today.

Hebrews 1:1-2 God, who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets, has in these last days spoken to us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the worlds;

The Prophet testified that God is real, with flesh and bones.

Correction: God is Spirit and does not have a physical body.

Num 23:19 "God is not a man, that He should lie, Nor a son of man, that He should repent." John 4:24 "God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth."

The Prophet also testified that the Book of Mormon is another witness of Christ.

Note: The Prophet is under a curse from God.

Galatians 1:8 But even if we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel to you than what we have preached to you, let him be accursed.

Then the Prophet told us how important it was to live the Word of Wisdom.

Correction: True Christians will not allow a man to judge them in food and drink.

Colossians 2:16-17 So let no one judge you in food or in drink, or regarding a festival or a new moon or sabbaths, which are a shadow of things to come, but the substance is of Christ.

The Prophet then counseled us to obey the Law of Tithing.

Correction: Tithing was a Old Testament law for the support of the Levites.

Numbers 18:21 "Behold, I have given the children of Levi all the tithes in Israel as an inheritance in return for the work which they perform, the work of the tabernacle of meeting."
