TITHING VERSUS GIVING
Definition of Tithing: A tenth part of something paid as a
voluntary contribution or tax for the support of a religious
establishment. Webster's Dictionary
Definition of Giving: To grant or bestow something to
someone else. Webster's Dictionary
1) Abraham gave a tithe from plunder not produce.
Genesis 14:15-20 He divided his forces against them by night, and
he and his servants attacked them and pursued them as far as Hobah,
which is north of Damascus. So he brought back all the goods, and also
brought back his brother Lot and his goods, as well as the women and
the people. And the king of Sodom went out to meet him at the Valley of
Shaveh (that is, the King's Valley), after his return from the defeat
of Chedorlaomer and the kings who were with him. Then Melchizedek king
of Salem brought out bread and wine; he was the priest of God Most
High. And he blessed him and said: "Blessed be Abram of God Most High,
Possessor of heaven and earth; And blessed be God Most High, Who has
delivered your enemies into your hand." And he gave him a tithe of all.
2) All farming produce was included when tithing for Israel.
Leviticus 27:30 "And
all the tithe of the land, whether of the seed of the land or of the
fruit of the tree, is the Lord's. It is holy to the Lord."
3) 20 percent more had to be included when tithing money.
Leviticus 27:31 "If a man wants at all to redeem any of his tithes, he shall add one-fifth to it."
4) All flocks and herds were tithed at 10 percent for Israel.
Leviticus 27:32 "And concerning the tithe of the herd or the flock, of
whatever passes under the rod, the tenth one shall be holy to the Lord."
5) All flocks and herds were not to be inspected before tithing.
Leviticus 27:33
"He shall not inquire whether it is good or bad, nor shall he exchange
it; and if he exchanges it at all, then both it and the one exchanged
for it shall be holy; it shall not be redeemed."
6) Tithing was for the tribe of Levi since they had no
inheritance in the land.
Numbers 18:21 "Behold, I have given the children of Levi all the
tithes in Israel as an inheritance in return for the work which they
perform, the work of the tabernacle of meeting."
Numbers 18:24 "For the tithes of the children of Israel, which
they offer up as a heave offering to the LORD, I have given to the
Levites as an inheritance; therefore I have said to them, 'Among the
children of Israel they shall have no inheritance.'"
7) The tithes were collected every third year for the Levites, strangers, fatherless, and widows.
Deuteronomy 26:11-13 "So you shall rejoice in
every good thing which the Lord your God has given to you and your
house, you and the Levite and the stranger who is among you. When you
have finished laying aside all the tithe of your increase in the third
year--the year of tithing--and have given it to the Levite, the
stranger, the fatherless, and the widow, so that they may eat within
your gates and be filled, then you shall say before the Lord your God:
'I have removed the holy tithe from my house, and also have given them
to the Levite, the stranger, the fatherless, and the widow, according
to all Your commandments which You have commanded me; I have not
transgressed Your commandments, nor have I forgotten them."
8) Giving involves compassion.
Matthew 25:40 "And the King will answer and say to them,
'Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did it to one of the least
of these My brethren, you did it to Me.'"
Luke 10:33 "But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where
he was. And when he saw him, he had compassion on him,"
9) Giving involves your substance and time.
Luke 10:34 "and went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on
oil and wine; and he set him on his own animal, brought him to an
inn, and took care of him."
Romans 12:13 ...distributing to the needs of the saints, given to
hospitality.
James 2:15-16 If a brother or sister is naked and destitute of
daily food, and one of you says to them, "Depart in peace, be warmed
and filled," but you do not give them the things which are needed for
the body, what does it profit?
10) Giving involves your money.
Luke 10:35 "On the next day, when he departed, he took out two
denarii, gave them to the innkeeper, and said to him, 'Take care of
him; and whatever more you spend, when I come again, I will repay
you.'"
11) Giving is a command of Jesus Christ.
Luke 10:37 "And he said, "He who showed mercy on him." Then Jesus
said to him, "Go and do likewise."
James 1:22 But be doers of the word, and not hearers only,
deceiving yourselves.
12) Giving should be done from the heart.
2 Corinthians 9:7 So let each one give as he purposes in his
heart, not grudgingly or of necessity; for God loves a cheerful
giver.
1 John 3:17 But whoever has this world's goods, and sees his
brother in need, and shuts up his heart from him, how does the love
of God abide in him?
