The Doctrine and Covenants
SECTION 125
Revelation given through Joseph Smith the Prophet, at
Nauvoo, Illinois, March 1841, concerning the Saints in the territory of
Iowa.
1–4, The Saints are to build cities and to gather to the stakes of Zion.
1 What is the will of the Lord concerning the saints in the Territory of Iowa?
Note: The will of God is for everyone to sincerely believe in Jesus Christ.
“And this is the will of Him who sent Me, that everyone who sees the
Son and believes in Him may have everlasting life; and I will raise him
up at the last day.” John 6:40
2 Verily, thus saith the Lord, I say unto you, if those who call
themselves by my name and are essaying to be my saints, if they will do
my will and keep my commandments concerning them, let them gather
themselves together unto the places which I shall appoint unto them by
my servant Joseph, and build up cities unto my name, that they may be
prepared for that which is in store for a time to come. 3 Let them
build up a city unto my name upon the land opposite the city of Nauvoo
and let the name of Zarahemla be named upon it.
Note: Joseph Smith tried to recreate a fictional Book of Mormon area.
Zarahemla is described as being near the mouth of a prominent river
which the Book of Mormon calls the Sidon River and this river is
described as flowing northward into the sea. The book further describes
Zarahemla as being south of the Land of Bountiful and immediately south
of a "narrow neck of land" that separates the southern land (which
includes Zarahemla) from a northern land. Zarahemla is described as
being north of the Land of Nephi and the Land of Nephi is described as
being north of the Land of First Inheritance. Narrow "strips of
wilderness" are described as surrounding Zarahemla on the west, east
and south of the River Sidon. The Book of Mormon claims Zarahemla has
significant ore deposits full of gold, silver, and copper.
4 And let all those who come from the east, and the west, and the
north, and the south, that have desires to dwell therein, take up their
inheritance in the same, as well as in the city of Nashville, or in the
city of Nauvoo, and in all the stakes which I have appointed, saith the
Lord.
Note: Joseph Smith was a false prophet.
Dissolution: In January 1842, the Zarahemla Stake was officially
dissolved. Church leaders consolidated members in Nauvoo, Illinois, to
help focus manpower on building the Nauvoo Temple and other community
needs.
