The Doctrine and Covenants
SECTION 126
Revelation given through Joseph Smith the Prophet, in
the house of Brigham Young, at Nauvoo, Illinois, July 9, 1841. Brigham
Young had just returned to his family in Nauvoo from a nearly two-year
mission to England.
1–3, Brigham Young is commended for his labors and is relieved of future travel abroad.
1 Dear and well-beloved brother, Brigham Young, verily thus saith the
Lord unto you: My servant Brigham, it is no more required at your hand
to leave your family as in times past, for your offering is acceptable
to me.
Note: Joseph Smith wanted Brigham Young to direct his British converts.
Brigham Young helped bring between 7,000 and 8,000 people into the
Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints during his mission to Great
Britain from 1839 to 1841.
2 I have seen your labor and toil in journeyings for my name.
Note: Joseph Smith wanted Brigham Young to direct his British converts.
Joseph Smith delegated broader administrative and kingdom-management
responsibilities to the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles during an August
1841 special conference, empowering Young and the apostles to direct
church affairs and missionary work.
3 I therefore command you to send my word abroad and take especial care
of your family from this time, henceforth and forever. Amen.
Note: Joseph Smith wanted Brigham Young to direct his British converts.
Brigham Young helped oversee early work and organization related to the
unfinished Nauvoo Temple (construction on which began in early 1841),
including early baptisms for the dead and logistical support for
gathering member contributions.
