BIBLICAL PRIESTHOODS
(Heb 2:17) Therefore, in all things He had to be made like His
brethren, that He might be a merciful and faithful High Priest
in things pertaining to God, to make propitiation for the sins of
the people.
(Heb 3:1-2) Therefore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly
calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest
of our confession, Christ Jesus, who was faithful to
Him who appointed Him, as Moses also was faithful in all His house.
(Heb 4:14-15) Seeing then that we have a great High Priest
who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us
hold fast our confession. For we do not have a High Priest
who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points
tempted as we are, yet without sin.
THE AARONIC PRIESTHOOD
(Heb 5:1-4) For every high priest taken from among men is
appointed for men in things pertaining to God, that he may offer both
gifts and sacrifices for sins. He can have compassion on those who
are ignorant and going astray, since he himself is also subject to
weakness. Because of this he is required as for the people, so also
for himself, to offer sacrifices for sins. And no man takes this
honor to himself, but he who is called by God, just as Aaron
was.
THE MELCHIZEDEKIAN PRIESTHOOD
(Heb 5:5-11) So also Christ did not glorify Himself to become High
Priest, but it was He who said to Him: "You are My Son, Today
I have begotten You." As He also says in another place: "You are a
priest forever According to the order of Melchizedek"; who,
in the days of His flesh, when He had offered up prayers and
supplications, with vehement cries and tears to Him who was able to
save Him from death, and was heard because of His godly fear, though
He was a Son, yet He learned obedience by the things which He
suffered. And having been perfected, He became the author of
eternal salvation to all who obey Him, called by God as High
Priest "according to the order of Melchizedek," of whom we have
much to say, and hard to explain, since you have become dull of
hearing.
(Heb 6:19-20) This hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both
sure and steadfast, and which enters the Presence behind the veil,
where the forerunner has entered for us, even Jesus, having become
High Priest forever according to the order of
Melchizedek.
(Heb 7:1-6) For this Melchizedek, king of Salem, priest of
the Most High God, who met Abraham returning from the slaughter of
the kings and blessed him, to whom also Abraham gave a tenth part of
all, first being translated "king of righteousness," and then also
king of Salem, meaning "king of peace," without father, without
mother, without genealogy, having neither beginning of days
nor end of life, but made like the Son of God, remains a priest
continually. Now consider how great this man was, to whom even
the patriarch Abraham gave a tenth of the spoils. And indeed those
who are of the sons of Levi, who receive the priesthood, have
a commandment to receive tithes from the people according to the law,
that is, from their brethren, though they have come from the
loins of Abraham; but he whose genealogy is not derived from them
received tithes from Abraham and blessed him who had the promises.
(Heb 7:11-28) Therefore, if perfection were through the Levitical
priesthood (for under it the people received the law), what
further need was there that another priest should rise
according to the order of Melchizedek, and not be called according to
the order of Aaron? For the priesthood being changed, of
necessity there is also a change of the law. For He of whom these
things are spoken belongs to another tribe, from which no man has
officiated at the altar. For it is evident that our Lord arose from
Judah, of which tribe Moses spoke nothing concerning priesthood.
And it is yet far more evident if, in the likeness of
Melchizedek, there arises another priest who has come, not
according to the law of a fleshly commandment, but according to
the power of an endless life. For He testifies: "You are a
priest forever According to the order of Melchizedek."
For on the one hand there is an annulling of the former
commandment (Levitical priesthood) because of its weakness and
unprofitableness, for the law made nothing perfect; on the
other hand, there is the bringing in of a better hope, through which
we draw near to God. And inasmuch as He was not made priest
without an oath (for they have become priests without an
oath, but He with an oath by Him who said to Him: "The LORD has sworn
And will not relent, 'You are a priest forever According to
the order of Melchizedek'"), by so much more Jesus has become a
surety of a better covenant. Also there were many priests,
because they were prevented by death from continuing. But He,
because He continues forever,
priesthood. Therefore He is also able to save to the
uttermost those who come to God through Him, since He always
lives to make intercession for them. For such a High Priest
was fitting for us, who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate
from sinners, and has become higher than the heavens; who does not
need daily, as those high priests, to offer up sacrifices,
first for His own sins and then for the people's, for this He did
once for all when He offered up Himself. For the law appoints as high
priests men who have weakness, but the word of the oath,
which came after the law, appoints the Son who has been perfected
forever. has an unchangeable
(Heb 8:1-4) Now this is the main point of the things we are
saying: We have such a High Priest, who is seated at the
right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens, a Minister of
the sanctuary and of the true tabernacle which the Lord erected,
and not man. For every high priest is appointed to offer
both gifts and sacrifices. Therefore it is necessary that this One
also have something to offer. For if He were on earth, He would
not be a priest, since there are priests
who offer the gifts according to the law;
(Heb 9:6-7) Now when these things had been thus prepared, the
priests always went into the first part of the tabernacle,
performing the services. But into the second part the high priest
went alone once a year, not without blood, which he offered for
himself and for the people's sins committed in ignorance;
(Heb 9:11) But Christ came as High Priest of the good
things to come, with the greater and more perfect tabernacle not
made with hands, that is, not of this creation.
(Heb 9:25) not that He should offer Himself often, as the high
priest enters the Most Holy Place every year with blood of
another;
(Heb 10:10-13) By that will we have been sanctified through the
offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. And every
priest stands ministering daily and offering repeatedly the
same sacrifices, which can never take away sins. But this Man, after
He had offered one sacrifice for sins forever, sat down at
the right hand of God, from that time waiting till His enemies are
made His footstool.
(Heb 10:19-22) Therefore, brethren, having boldness to enter the
Holiest by the blood of Jesus, by a new and living way which
He consecrated for us, through the veil, that is, His flesh, and
having a High Priest over the house of God, let us draw near
with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our
hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with
pure water.
(Heb 13:11) For the bodies of those animals, whose blood is
brought into the sanctuary by the high priest for sin, are
burned outside the camp.
(1 Pet 2:4-5) Coming to Him as to a living stone, rejected indeed
by men, but chosen by God and precious, you also, as living stones,
are being built up a spiritual house, a holy priesthood, to
offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus
Christ.
(1 Pet 2:9-10) But you are a chosen generation, a royal
priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you
may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness
into His marvelous light; who once were not a people but are now the
people of God, who had not obtained mercy but now have obtained
mercy.
(Rev 1:4-6) John, to the seven churches which are in Asia: Grace
to you and peace from Him who is and who was and who is to come, and
from the seven Spirits who are before His throne, and from Jesus
Christ, the faithful witness, the firstborn from the dead, and the
ruler over the kings of the earth. To Him who loved us and washed us
from our sins in His own blood, and has made us kings and
priests to His God and Father, to Him be glory and
dominion forever and ever. Amen.
(Rev 5:10) And have made us kings and priests
to our God; And we shall reign on the earth."
(Rev 20:6) Blessed and holy is he who has part in the first
resurrection. Over such the second death has no power, but they
shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall
reign with Him a thousand years.
