3 Nephi Chapter 23 Critique
Setting: Jesus approves the
words of Isaiah—He commands the people to search the prophets—The words
of Samuel the Lamanite concerning the Resurrection are added to their
records. About A.D. 34.
Verses 1-3: And now, behold, I
say unto you, that ye ought to search these things. Yea, a commandment
I give unto you that ye search these things diligently; for great are
the words of Isaiah. For surely he spake as touching all things
concerning my people which are of the house of Israel; therefore it
must needs be that he must speak also to the Gentiles. And all things
that he spake have been and shall be, even according to the words which
he spake.
Note: The inheritance for the house of Israel is in the Middle East.
In that day there will be a highway from Egypt to Assyria, and the
Assyrian will come into Egypt and the Egyptian into Assyria, and the
Egyptians will serve with the Assyrians. In that day Israel will be one
of three with Egypt and Assyria—a blessing in the midst of the land,
whom the Lord of hosts shall bless, saying, “Blessed is Egypt My
people, and Assyria the work of My hands, and Israel My inheritance.”
Isaiah 19:23-25.
Verse 4: Therefore give heed to
my words; write the things which I have told you; and according to the
time and the will of the Father they shall go forth unto the Gentiles.
Note: There were no writing systems in Pre-Columbian South America.
Since the Inca Empire lacked a written language, the empire's main form
of communication and recording came from quipus, ceramics and spoken
Quechua, the language the Incas imposed upon the peoples within the
empire. Wikipedia Encyclopedia.
Verse 5: And whosoever will
hearken unto my words and repenteth and is baptized, the same shall be
saved. Search the prophets, for many there be that testify of these
things.
Note: Sincere confession of Jesus Christ will save you.
But the other, answering, rebuked him, saying, “Do you not even fear
God, seeing you are under the same condemnation? And we indeed justly,
for we receive the due reward of our deeds; but this Man has done
nothing wrong.” Then he said to Jesus, “Lord, remember me when You come
into Your kingdom.” And Jesus said to him, “Assuredly, I say to you,
today you will be with Me in Paradise.” Matthew 23:40-43.
Note: Sidney Rigdon believed in the baptismal regeneration heresy.
Verses 6-7: And now it came to
pass that when Jesus had said these words he said unto them again,
after he had expounded all the scriptures unto them which they had
received, he said unto them: Behold, other scriptures I would that ye
should write, that ye have not. And it came to pass that he said unto
Nephi: Bring forth the record which ye have kept.
Note: Pagan Pre-Columbian writing was not about God.
A small number of artefacts found in the Isthmus of Tehuantepec show
examples of another early Mesoamerican writing system. They can be seen
to contain calendric information but are otherwise undeciphered. The
longest of these texts are on La Mojarra Stela 1 and the Tuxtla
Statuette. The writing system used is very close to the Mayan script,
using affixal glyphs and Long Count dates, but is read only in one
column at a time as is the Zapotec script. It has been suggested that
this Isthmian or Epi-Olmec script is the direct predecessor of the
Mayan script, thus giving the Mayan script a non-Mayan origin. Another
artefact with Epi-Olmec script is the Chiapa de Corzo stela which is
the oldest monument of the Americas inscribed with its own date: the
Long Count on the stela dates it to 36 BCE. Wikipedia Encyclopedia.
Verses 8-9: And when Nephi had
brought forth the records, and laid them before him, he cast his eyes
upon them and said: Verily I say unto you, I commanded my servant
Samuel, the Lamanite, that he should testify unto this people, that at
the day that the Father should glorify his name in me that there were
many saints who should arise from the dead, and should appear unto
many, and should minister unto them. And he said unto them: Was it not
so?
Note: Pagan Pre-Columbian natives had no knowledge of God.
Not only could a real history of ancient America now be read and
understood, but the light it shed on the material remains of the Maya
showed them to be real, recognisable individuals. They stood revealed
as a people with a history like that of all other human societies: full
of wars, dynastic struggles, shifting political alliances, complex
religious and artistic systems, expressions of personal property and
ownership and the like. Wikipedia Encyclopedia.
Verses 10-12: And his disciples
answered him and said: Yea, Lord, Samuel did prophesy according to thy
words, and they were all fulfilled. And Jesus said unto them: How be it
that ye have not written this thing, that many saints did arise and
appear unto many and did minister unto them? And it came to pass that
Nephi remembered that this thing had not been written.
Note: Pagan Pre-Columbian natives had no knowledge of God.
The decipherment and recovery of the knowledge of Maya writing has been
a long and laborious process. Some elements were first deciphered in
the late 19th and early 20th century, mostly the parts having to do
with numbers, the Maya calendar, and astronomy. Major breakthroughs
were made from the 1950s to 1970s, and accelerated rapidly thereafter.
By the end of the 20th century, scholars were able to read the majority
of Maya texts, and ongoing work continues to further illuminate the
content. Wikipedia Encyclopedia.
Verses 13-14: And it came to
pass that Jesus commanded that it should be written; therefore it was
written according as he commanded. And now it came to pass that when
Jesus had expounded all the scriptures in one, which they had written,
he commanded them that they should teach the things which he had
expounded unto them.
Note: Pagan Pre-Columbian natives had no knowledge of God.
In common with the rest of Mesoamerica, the Maya believed in a
supernatural realm inhabited by an array of powerful deities. These
deities needed to be placated with ceremonial offerings and ritual
practices. At the core of Maya religious practice was the worship of
deceased ancestors, who would act as go-betweens for their living
descendants in dealings with the denizens of the supernatural realm.
The earliest intermediaries between humans and the supernatural realm
were shamans. Wikipedia Encyclopedia.
