Helaman Chapter 10 Critique
Setting: The Lord gives Nephi
the sealing power—He is empowered to bind and loose on earth and in
heaven—He commands the people to repent or perish—The Spirit carries
him from multitude to multitude. About 21–20 B.C.
Verses 1-2: And it came to pass
that there arose a division among the people, insomuch that they
divided hither and thither and went their ways, leaving Nephi alone, as
he was standing in the midst of them. And it came to pass that Nephi
went his way towards his own house, pondering upon the things which the
Lord had shown unto him.
Note: Divisions generally don’t end peacefully.
So when he could not ascertain the truth because of the tumult, he
commanded him to be taken into the barracks. When he reached the
stairs, he had to be carried by the soldiers because of the violence of
the mob. For the multitude of the people followed after, crying out,
“Away with him!” Then as Paul was about to be led into the barracks, he
said to the commander, “May I speak to you?” Acts 21:34-37.
Verses 3-4: And it came to pass
as he was thus pondering—being much cast down because of the wickedness
of the people of the Nephites, their secret works of darkness, and
their murderings, and their plunderings, and all manner of
iniquities—and it came to pass as he was thus pondering in his heart,
behold, a voice came unto him saying: Blessed art thou, Nephi, for
those things which thou hast done; for I have beheld how thou hast with
unwearyingness declared the word, which I have given unto thee, unto
this people. And thou hast not feared them, and hast not sought thine
own life, but hast sought my will, and to keep my commandments.
Note: Nephi was not keeping the commandments of God.
“Now if the whole congregation of Israel sins unintentionally, and the
thing is hidden from the eyes of the assembly, and they have done
something against any of the commandments of the Lord in anything which
should not be done, and are guilty; when the sin which they have
committed becomes known, then the assembly shall offer a young bull for
the sin, and bring it before the tabernacle of meeting. And the elders
of the congregation shall lay their hands on the head of the bull
before the Lord. Then the bull shall be killed before the Lord.”
Leviticus 4:13-15.
Verse 5: And now, because thou
hast done this with such unwearyingness, behold, I will bless thee
forever; and I will make thee mighty in word and in deed, in faith and
in works; yea, even that all things shall be done unto thee according
to thy word, for thou shalt not ask that which is contrary to my will.
Note: Nephi was not in the will of God.
“If his offering is a burnt sacrifice of the herd, let him offer a male
without blemish; he shall offer it of his own free will at the door of
the tabernacle of meeting before the Lord. Then he shall put his hand
on the head of the burnt offering, and it will be accepted on his
behalf to make atonement for him.” Leviticus 1:3-4.
Verse 6: Behold, thou art
Nephi, and I am God. Behold, I declare it unto thee in the presence of
mine angels, that ye shall have power over this people, and shall smite
the earth with famine, and with pestilence, and destruction, according
to the wickedness of this people.
Note: God will punish wicked people Himself.
Thus says the Lord of hosts: “Behold, I will send on them the sword,
the famine, and the pestilence, and will make them like rotten figs
that cannot be eaten, they are so bad.” Jeremiah 29:17.
Verse 7: Behold, I give unto
you power, that whatsoever ye shall seal on earth shall be sealed in
heaven; and whatsoever ye shall loose on earth shall be loosed in
heaven; and thus shall ye have power among this people.
Note: Sidney Rigdon paraphrased the Holy Bible.
“Assuredly, I say to you, whatever you bind on earth will be bound in
heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.”
Matthew 18:18.
Verse 8: And thus, if ye shall say unto this temple it shall be rent in twain, it shall be done.
Note: Sidney Rigdon forgot that it was the veil that was torn in two.
Then the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. Mark 15:38
Verse 9: And if ye shall say unto this mountain, Be thou cast down and become smooth, it shall be done.
Note: Sidney Rigdon paraphrased the Holy Bible.
“For assuredly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be
removed and be cast into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but
believes that those things he says will be done, he will have whatever
he says.” Mark 11:23.
Verses 10-11: And behold, if ye
shall say that God shall smite this people, it shall come to pass. And
now behold, I command you, that ye shall go and declare unto this
people, that thus saith the Lord God, who is the Almighty: Except ye
repent ye shall be smitten, even unto destruction.
Note: Old Testament repentance involved animal sacrifice.
“And it shall be, when he is guilty in any of these matters, that he
shall confess that he has sinned in that thing; 6and he shall bring his
trespass offering to the Lord for his sin which he has committed, a
female from the flock, a lamb or a kid of the goats as a sin offering.
So the priest shall make atonement for him concerning his sin.”
Leviticus 5:5-6.
Verses 12-14: And behold, now
it came to pass that when the Lord had spoken these words unto Nephi,
he did stop and did not go unto his own house, but did return unto the
multitudes who were scattered about upon the face of the land, and
began to declare unto them the word of the Lord which had been spoken
unto him, concerning their destruction if they did not repent. Now
behold, notwithstanding that great miracle which Nephi had done in
telling them concerning the death of the chief judge, they did harden
their hearts and did not hearken unto the words of the Lord. Therefore
Nephi did declare unto them the word of the Lord, saying: Except ye
repent, thus saith the Lord, ye shall be smitten even unto destruction.
Note: Old Testament repentance involved animal sacrifice.
“If he is not able to bring a lamb, then he shall bring to the Lord,
for his trespass which he has committed, two turtledoves or two young
pigeons: one as a sin offering and the other as a burnt offering.”
Leviticus 5:7.
Verses 15-17: And it came to
pass that when Nephi had declared unto them the word, behold, they did
still harden their hearts and would not hearken unto his words;
therefore they did revile against him, and did seek to lay their hands
upon him that they might cast him into prison. But behold, the power of
God was with him, and they could not take him to cast him into prison,
for he was taken by the Spirit and conveyed away out of the midst of
them. And it came to pass that thus he did go forth in the Spirit, from
multitude to multitude, declaring the word of God, even until he had
declared it unto them all, or sent it forth among all the people.
Note: Sidney Rigdon paraphrased the Holy Bible.
Now when they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord caught
Philip away, so that the eunuch saw him no more; and he went on his way
rejoicing. But Philip was found at Azotus. And passing through, he
preached in all the cities till he came to Caesarea. Acts 8:39-40.
Verses 18-19: And it came to
pass that they would not hearken unto his words; and there began to be
contentions, insomuch that they were divided against themselves and
began to slay one another with the sword. And thus ended the seventy
and first year of the reign of the judges over the people of Nephi.
Note: Pre-Columbian natives did not use swords.
Cutting weapons were used by the Native Americans for combat as well as
hunting. They preferred shorter blades, and did not use long cutting
weapons, like the swords that the Europeans used at the time. Wikipedia
