Helaman Chapter 15 Critique
Setting: The Lord chastened the
Nephites because He loved them—Converted Lamanites are firm and
steadfast in the faith—The Lord will be merciful unto the Lamanites in
the latter days. About 6 B.C.
Verse 1: And now, my beloved
brethren, behold, I declare unto you that except ye shall repent your
houses shall be left unto you desolate.
Note: Old Testament repentance involved animal sacrifice.
And the one who offered his offering on the first day was Nahshon the
son of Amminadab, from the tribe of Judah. His offering was one silver
platter, the weight of which was one hundred and thirty shekels, and
one silver bowl of seventy shekels, according to the shekel of the
sanctuary, both of them full of fine flour mixed with oil as a grain
offering; one gold pan of ten shekels, full of incense; one young bull,
one ram, and one male lamb in its first year, as a burnt offering; one
kid of the goats as a sin offering; and for the sacrifice of peace
offerings: two oxen, five rams, five male goats, and five male lambs in
their first year. This was the offering of Nahshon the son of
Amminadab. Numbers 7:12-17.
Verse 2: Yea, except ye repent,
your women shall have great cause to mourn in the day that they shall
give suck; for ye shall attempt to flee and there shall be no place for
refuge; yea, and wo unto them which are with child, for they shall be
heavy and cannot flee; therefore, they shall be trodden down and shall
be left to perish.
Note: Old Testament repentance involved animal sacrifice.
On the second day Nethanel the son of Zuar, leader of Issachar,
presented an offering. For his offering he offered one silver platter,
the weight of which was one hundred and thirty shekels, and one silver
bowl of seventy shekels, according to the shekel of the sanctuary, both
of them full of fine flour mixed with oil as a grain offering; one gold
pan of ten shekels, full of incense; one young bull, one ram, and one
male lamb in its first year, as a burnt offering; one kid of the goats
as a sin offering; and as the sacrifice of peace offerings: two oxen,
five rams, five male goats, and five male lambs in their first year.
This was the offering of Nethanel the son of Zuar. Numbers 7:18-23.
Verse 3: Yea, wo unto this
people who are called the people of Nephi except they shall repent,
when they shall see all these signs and wonders which shall be showed
unto them; for behold, they have been a chosen people of the Lord; yea,
the people of Nephi hath he loved, and also hath he chastened them;
yea, in the days of their iniquities hath he chastened them because he
loveth them.
Note: Old Testament repentance involved animal sacrifice.
On the third day Eliab the son of Helon, leader of the children of
Zebulun, presented an offering. His offering was one silver platter,
the weight of which was one hundred and thirty shekels, and one silver
bowl of seventy shekels, according to the shekel of the sanctuary, both
of them full of fine flour mixed with oil as a grain offering; one gold
pan of ten shekels, full of incense; one young bull, one ram, and one
male lamb in its first year, as a burnt offering; one kid of the goats
as a sin offering; and for the sacrifice of peace offerings: two oxen,
five rams, five male goats, and five male lambs in their first year.
This was the offering of Eliab the son of Helon. Numbers 7:24-29.
Verses 4-5: But behold my
brethren, the Lamanites hath he hated because their deeds have been
evil continually, and this because of the iniquity of the tradition of
their fathers. But behold, salvation hath come unto them through the
preaching of the Nephites; and for this intent hath the Lord prolonged
their days. And I would that ye should behold that the more part of
them are in the path of their duty, and they do walk circumspectly
before God, and they do observe to keep his commandments and his
statutes and his judgments according to the law of Moses.
Note: The Law of Moses required animal sacrifices.
Then he brought the ram as the burnt offering. And Aaron and his sons
laid their hands on the head of the ram, and Moses killed it. Then he
sprinkled the blood all around on the altar. And he cut the ram into
pieces; and Moses burned the head, the pieces, and the fat. Then he
washed the entrails and the legs in water. And Moses burned the whole
ram on the altar. It was a burnt sacrifice for a sweet aroma, an
offering made by fire to the Lord, as the Lord had commanded Moses.
Leviticus 8:18-21.
Verse 6: Yea, I say unto you,
that the more part of them are doing this, and they are striving with
unwearied diligence that they may bring the remainder of their brethren
to the knowledge of the truth; therefore there are many who do add to
their numbers daily.
Note: Old Testament truth required animal sacrifices.
On the fourth day Elizur the son of Shedeur, leader of the children of
Reuben, presented an offering. His offering was one silver platter, the
weight of which was one hundred and thirty shekels, and one silver bowl
of seventy shekels, according to the shekel of the sanctuary, both of
them full of fine flour mixed with oil as a grain offering; one gold
pan of ten shekels, full of incense; one young bull, one ram, and one
male lamb in its first year, as a burnt offering; one kid of the goats
as a sin offering; and as the sacrifice of peace offerings: two oxen,
five rams, five male goats, and five male lambs in their first year.
This was the offering of Elizur the son of Shedeur. Numbers 7:30-35.
Verse 7: And behold, ye do know
of yourselves, for ye have witnessed it, that as many of them as are
brought to the knowledge of the truth, and to know of the wicked and
abominable traditions of their fathers, and are led to believe the holy
scriptures, yea, the prophecies of the holy prophets, which are
written, which leadeth them to faith on the Lord, and unto repentance,
which faith and repentance bringeth a change of heart unto them—
Note: Old Testament repentance involved animal sacrifice.
On the fifth day Shelumiel the son of Zurishaddai, leader of the
children of Simeon, presented an offering. His offering was one silver
platter, the weight of which was one hundred and thirty shekels, and
one silver bowl of seventy shekels, according to the shekel of the
sanctuary, both of them full of fine flour mixed with oil as a grain
offering; one gold pan of ten shekels, full of incense; one young bull,
one ram, and one male lamb in its first year, as a burnt offering; one
kid of the goats as a sin offering; and as the sacrifice of peace
offerings: two oxen, five rams, five male goats, and five male lambs in
their first year. This was the offering of Shelumiel the son of
Zurishaddai. Numbers 7:36-41.
Verse 8: Therefore, as many as
have come to this, ye know of yourselves are firm and steadfast in the
faith, and in the thing wherewith they have been made free.
Note: Faith was not revealed in the Old Testament era.
But the Scripture has confined all under sin, that the promise by faith
in Jesus Christ might be given to those who believe. But before faith
came, we were kept under guard by the law, kept for the faith which
would afterward be revealed. Therefore the law was our tutor to bring
us to Christ, that we might be justified by faith. But after faith has
come, we are no longer under a tutor. Galatians 3:22-25.
Verse 9: And ye know also that
they have buried their weapons of war, and they fear to take them up
lest by any means they should sin; yea, ye can see that they fear to
sin—for behold they will suffer themselves that they be trodden down
and slain by their enemies, and will not lift their swords against
them, and this because of their faith in Christ.
Note: Faith in Jesus Christ did not occur until Pentecost.
And when they had come to him, he said to them: “You know, from the
first day that I came to Asia, in what manner I always lived among you,
serving the Lord with all humility, with many tears and trials which
happened to me by the plotting of the Jews; how I kept back nothing
that was helpful, but proclaimed it to you, and taught you publicly and
from house to house, testifying to Jews, and also to Greeks, repentance
toward God and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ.” Acts 20:18-21.
Verses 10-12: And now, because
of their steadfastness when they do believe in that thing which they do
believe, for because of their firmness when they are once enlightened,
behold, the Lord shall bless them and prolong their days,
notwithstanding their iniquity- Yea, even if they should dwindle in
unbelief the Lord shall prolong their days, until the time shall come
which hath been spoken of by our fathers, and also by the prophet
Zenos, and many other prophets, concerning the restoration of our
brethren, the Lamanites, again to the knowledge of the truth— Yea, I
say unto you, that in the latter times the promises of the Lord have
been extended to our brethren, the Lamanites; and notwithstanding the
many afflictions which they shall have, and notwithstanding they shall
be driven to and fro upon the face of the earth, and be hunted, and
shall be smitten and scattered abroad, having no place for refuge, the
Lord shall be merciful unto them.

Bodily sacrifice was commonplace in dedication rituals, whether in
bloodletting or sacrificing a war victim, or one of the many
sacrificial rituals employed in Mesoamerica. Sacrifice specifically
represents a returning of life to the Earth and deities, who were seen
as life-providers for the Mesoamerican people. The importance of
sacrifice in Classic Maya culture can be seen in Structure O-13 at
Piedras Negras where vessels of obsidian blades, stingray spines, and
other bloodletting utensils lined the pathway along the structure.
These materials increased in count along the pathway, leading to a main
room in which sacrifice rituals took place. These materials and their
context clearly dedicate Structure O-13 to deity worship through
sacrificial offerings. Wikipedia Encyclopedia.
Verse 13: And this is according
to the prophecy, that they shall again be brought to the true
knowledge, which is the knowledge of their Redeemer, and their great
and true shepherd, and be numbered among his sheep.
Note: Pre-Columbian prophecies were based on calendars.
The far more sophisticated pre-Hispanic Mayan astrology is mainly found
in the relatively late Dresden Codex, and concerns lunar and solar
eclipses and the varying aspects of Venus in the course of its cycles;
animals and deities symbolize the social groups negatively affected by
Venus during its heliacal rising as the Morning Star. Wikipedia

Verse 14: Therefore I say unto you, it shall be better for them than for you except ye repent.

On the sixth day Eliasaph the son of Deuel, leader of the children of
Gad, presented an offering.
This was the offering of Eliasaph the son of Deuel. Numbers 7:42-47.
Verse 15: For behold, had the
mighty works been shown unto them which have been shown unto you, yea,
unto them who have dwindled in unbelief because of the traditions of
their fathers, ye can see of yourselves that they never would again
have dwindled in unbelief.
Note: Sidney Rigdon paraphrased the Holy Bible.
“Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the mighty works
which were done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have
repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.” Matthew 11:21.
Verse 16: Therefore, saith the
Lord: I will not utterly destroy them, but I will cause that in the day
of my wisdom they shall return again unto me, saith the Lord.
Note: Pre-Columbian natives were polytheistic pagans.
Whereas, within the three authentic codices, the group of male deities
is highly differentiated, the female functions seem largely to have
been concentrated in the young goddess I (the 'White Woman') and the
old goddess O (the 'Red Woman'). Missing from the codices, but attested
by Classic iconography are, amongst others, an important ocean deity
characterized by a shark tooth set in the mouth (the 'God I' of the
Palenque Triad), and some of the Maya jaguar gods associated with
warfare. The Postclassic Maya deity Kukulcan ('Feathered Serpent'),
tutelary deity of the Toltec invaders and of the Maya kings deriving
their legitimacy from them, is nearly absent from the codices.

Verse 17: And now behold, saith
the Lord, concerning the people of the Nephites: If they will not
repent, and observe to do my will, I will utterly destroy them, saith
the Lord, because of their unbelief notwithstanding the many mighty
works which I have done among them; and as surely as the Lord liveth
shall these things be, saith the Lord.

male lamb in its first year, as a burnt offering; one kid of the goats
as a sin offering; and as the sacrifice of peace offerings: two oxen,
five rams, five male goats, and five male lambs in their first year.
This was the offering of Elishama the son of Ammihud. Numbers 7:48-53.
