Helaman Chapter 4 Critique
Setting: Nephite dissenters and
the Lamanites join forces and take the land of Zarahemla—The Nephites’
defeats come because of their wickedness—The Church dwindles, and the
people become weak like the Lamanites. About 38–30 B.C.
Verses 1-5: And it came to pass
in the fifty and fourth year there were many dissensions in the church,
and there was also a contention among the people, insomuch that there
was much bloodshed. And the rebellious part were slain and driven out
of the land, and they did go unto the king of the Lamanites. And it
came to pass that they did endeavor to stir up the Lamanites to war
against the Nephites; but behold, the Lamanites were exceedingly
afraid, insomuch that they would not hearken to the words of those
dissenters. But it came to pass in the fifty and sixth year of the
reign of the judges, there were dissenters who went up from the
Nephites unto the Lamanites; and they succeeded with those others in
stirring them up to anger against the Nephites; and they were all that
year preparing for war. And in the fifty and seventh year they did come
down against the Nephites to battle, and they did commence the work of
death; yea, insomuch that in the fifty and eighth year of the reign of
the judges they succeeded in obtaining possession of the land of
Zarahemla; yea, and also all the lands, even unto the land which was
near the land Bountiful.
Note: It generally takes a generation for people to spiritually forget.
When all that generation had been gathered to their fathers, another
generation arose after them who did not know the Lord nor the work
which He had done for Israel. Judges 2:10
Verses 6-8: And the Nephites
and the armies of Moronihah were driven even into the land of
Bountiful; And there they did fortify against the Lamanites, from the
west sea, even unto the east; it being a day’s journey for a Nephite,
on the line which they had fortified and stationed their armies to
defend their north country. And thus those dissenters of the Nephites,
with the help of a numerous army of the Lamanites, had obtained all the
possession of the Nephites which was in the land southward. And all
this was done in the fifty and eighth and ninth years of the reign of
the judges.
Note: Solomon Spauding didn’t know South American geography.
As much of the Amazon is unexplored, many of its indigenous plants
animals and insects are unknown. Plant growth is dense and its variety
of animal inhabitants is comparatively high due to the heavy rainfall
and the dense and extensive evergreen and coniferous forests. The
sunlight can not reach the ground because of the dense roof created by
plants. The ground remains dark and damp and only shade tolerant trees
and vegetation will grow here. Wikipedia Encyclopedia
Note: Lamanites conquered over 1,000 miles territory in one year?
Verses 9-10: And it came to
pass in the sixtieth year of the reign of the judges, Moronihah did
succeed with his armies in obtaining many parts of the land; yea, they
regained many cities which had fallen into the hands of the Lamanites.
And it came to pass in the sixty and first year of the reign of the
judges they succeeded in regaining even the half of all their
possessions.
Note: Solomon Spauding didn’t know about Orinoco River.
The Orinoco is one of the longest rivers in South America at 2,140
kilometres (1,330 mi). Its drainage basin, sometimes called the
Orinoquia, covers 880,000 square kilometres (340,000 sq mi), with 76.3
percent of it in Venezuela and the remainder in Colombia. The Orinoco
and its tributaries are the major transportation system for eastern and
interior Venezuela and the llanos of Colombia.
Note: The Nephites regained 500 miles of territory in one year?
Verse 11: Now this great loss
of the Nephites, and the great slaughter which was among them, would
not have happened had it not been for their wickedness and their
abomination which was among them; yea, and it was among those also who
professed to belong to the church of God.
Note: Sidney Rigdon didn’t know that the word “church” was recent word.
Middle English chirche, from Old English cirice, ultimately from Late
Greek kyriakon, from Greek, neuter of kyriakos of the lord, from kyrios
lord, master. First Known Use: before 12th century. Merriam-Webster
Dictionary.
Verses 12-14: And it was
because of the pride of their hearts, because of their exceeding
riches, yea, it was because of their oppression to the poor,
withholding their food from the hungry, withholding their clothing from
the naked, and smiting their humble brethren upon the cheek, making a
mock of that which was sacred, denying the spirit of prophecy and of
revelation, murdering, plundering, lying, stealing, committing
adultery, rising up in great contentions, and deserting away into the
land of Nephi, among the Lamanites— And because of this their great
wickedness, and their boastings in their own strength, they were left
in their own strength; therefore they did not prosper, but were
afflicted and smitten, and driven before the Lamanites, until they had
lost possession of almost all their lands. But behold, Moronihah did
preach many things unto the people because of their iniquity, and also
Nephi and Lehi, who were the sons of Helaman, did preach many things
unto the people, yea, and did prophesy many things unto them concerning
their iniquities, and what should come unto them if they did not repent
of their sins.
Note: It generally takes a generation for people to spiritually forget.
And the Lord would separate him from all the tribes of Israel for
adversity, according to all the curses of the covenant that are written
in this Book of the Law, so that the coming generation of your children
who rise up after you, and the foreigner who comes from a far land,
would say, when they see the plagues of that land and the sicknesses
which the Lord has laid on it. Deuteronomy 29:21-22.
Verses 15-17: And it came to
pass that they did repent, and inasmuch as they did repent they did
begin to prosper. For when Moronihah saw that they did repent he did
venture to lead them forth from place to place, and from city to city,
even until they had regained the one-half of their property and the
one-half of all their lands. And thus ended the sixty and first year of
the reign of the judges.
Note: Repentance and restoration is generally not a quick possess.
“When they sin against You (for there is no one who does not sin), and
You become angry with them and deliver them to the enemy, and they take
them captive to a land far or near; yet when they come to themselves in
the land where they were carried captive, and repent, and make
supplication to You in the land of their captivity, saying, ‘We have
sinned, we have done wrong, and have committed wickedness’; and when
they return to You with all their heart and with all their soul in the
land of their captivity, where they have been carried captive, and pray
toward their land which You gave to their fathers, the city which You
have chosen, and toward the temple which I have built for Your name:
then hear from heaven Your dwelling place their prayer and their
supplications, and maintain their cause, and forgive Your people who
have sinned against You. 2 Chronicles 6:36-39.
Verses 18-20: And it came to
pass in the sixty and second year of the reign of the judges, that
Moronihah could obtain no more possessions over the Lamanites.
Therefore they did abandon their design to obtain the remainder of
their lands, for so numerous were the Lamanites that it became
impossible for the Nephites to obtain more power over them; therefore
Moronihah did employ all his armies in maintaining those parts which he
had taken. And it came to pass, because of the greatness of the number
of the Lamanites the Nephites were in great fear, lest they should be
overpowered, and trodden down, and slain, and destroyed.
Note: The Nephites should have offered an animal sacrifice.
Then the Lord said to him, “Peace be with you; do not fear, you shall
not die.” So Gideon built an altar there to the Lord, and called it
The-Lord-Is-Peace. To this day it is still in Ophrah of the Abiezrites.
Judges 6:23-24.
Verses 21-22: Yea, they began
to remember the prophecies of Alma, and also the words of Mosiah; and
they saw that they had been a stiffnecked people, and that they had set
at naught the commandments of God; And that they had altered and
trampled under their feet the laws of Mosiah, or that which the Lord
commanded him to give unto the people; and they saw that their laws had
become corrupted, and that they had become a wicked people, insomuch
that they were wicked even like unto the Lamanites.
Note: The Nephites should have offered an animal sacrifice.
Now it came to pass the same night that the Lord said to him, “Take
your father’s young bull, the second bull of seven years old, and tear
down the altar of Baal that your father has, and cut down the wooden
image that is beside it; 26and build an altar to the Lord your God on
top of this rock in the proper arrangement, and take the second bull
and offer a burnt sacrifice with the wood of the image which you shall
cut down.” Judges 6:25-26.
Verses 23-24: And because of
their iniquity the church had begun to dwindle; and they began to
disbelieve in the spirit of prophecy and in the spirit of revelation;
and the judgments of God did stare them in the face. And they saw that
they had become weak, like unto their brethren, the Lamanites, and that
the Spirit of the Lord did no more preserve them; yea, it had withdrawn
from them because the Spirit of the Lord doth not dwell in unholy
temples—
Note: The Nephites should have offered an animal sacrifice.
So Manoah took the young goat with the grain offering, and offered it
upon the rock to the Lord. And He did a wondrous thing while Manoah and
his wife looked on— it happened as the flame went up toward heaven from
the altar—the Angel of the Lord ascended in the flame of the altar!
When Manoah and his wife saw this, they fell on their faces to the
ground. Judges 13:19-20.
Verses 25-26: Therefore the
Lord did cease to preserve them by his miraculous and matchless power,
for they had fallen into a state of unbelief and awful wickedness; and
they saw that the Lamanites were exceedingly more numerous than they,
and except they should cleave unto the Lord their God they must
unavoidably perish. For behold, they saw that the strength of the
Lamanites was as great as their strength, even man for man. And thus
had they fallen into this great transgression; yea, thus had they
become weak, because of their transgression, in the space of not many
years.
Note: The Nephites should have offered an animal sacrifice.
Now the Lord called to Moses, and spoke to him from the tabernacle of
meeting, saying, “Speak to the children of Israel, and say to them:
‘When any one of you brings an offering to the Lord, you shall bring
your offering of the livestock—of the herd and of the flock. Leviticus
1:1-2.
