The Book of Moroni - Chapter 2 Critique
Setting: Jesus gave the twelve Nephite disciples power to confer the gift of the Holy Ghost. About A.D. 401–421.
Verse 1: The words of Christ, which he spake unto his disciples, the twelve whom he had chosen, as he laid his hands upon them—
Note: Jesus Christ never gave the Holy Spirit through the laying on of hands.
So Jesus said to them again, “Peace to you! As the Father has sent Me,
I also send you.” And when He had said this, He breathed on them, and
said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit.” John 20:21-22.
Verse 2: And he called them by
name, saying: Ye shall call on the Father in my name, in mighty prayer;
and after ye have done this ye shall have power that to him upon whom
ye shall lay your hands, ye shall give the Holy Ghost; and in my name
shall ye give it, for thus do mine apostles.
Note: The Holy Spirit will be given through sincere belief in Jesus Christ.
While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit fell upon
all those who heard the word. And those of the circumcision who
believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because the gift
of the Holy Spirit had been poured out on the Gentiles also. Acts
10:44-45.
Verse 3: Now Christ spake these
words unto them at the time of his first appearing; and the multitude
heard it not, but the disciples heard it; and on as many as they laid
their hands, fell the Holy Ghost.
Note: The Holy Spirit was not poured out until after Jesus Christ ascended into heaven.
“Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go
away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if
I depart, I will send Him to you.” John 16:7.
Note: Sidney Rigdon's flawed doctrines are the basis for Mormonism.
