Mosiah - Chapter 26 Critique

Setting: King Mosiah allows Alma to judge members within the church from 120 to 100 B.C. America per Mormon dating calculations.

Verse 1: NOW it came to pass that there were many of the rising generation that could not understand the words of king Benjamin, being little children at the time he spake unto his people; and they did not believe the tradition of their fathers.

Note: Alma was out of touch with the members of the "church."

Leviticus 10:9-11 "Do not drink wine or intoxicating drink, you, nor your sons with you, when you go into the tabernacle of meeting, lest you die. It shall be a statute forever throughout your generations, that you may distinguish between holy and unholy, and between unclean and clean, and that you may teach the children of Israel all the statutes which the LORD has spoken to them by the hand of Moses."

Verse 2: They did not believe what had been said concerning the resurrection of the dead, neither did they believe concerning the coming of Christ.

Note: Have you put your trust in Jesus Christ for eternal life?

John 11:25-26 Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live. And whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die. Do you believe this?"

Note: Christ is from Old English Crist; from Latin Christus; from Greek Christos.

Verse 3: And now because of their unbelief they could not understand the word of God; and their hearts were hardened.

Note: Sidney Rigdon plagiarized the New Testament.

Acts 19:9 But when some were hardened and did not believe, but spoke evil of the Way before the multitude, he departed from them and withdrew the disciples, reasoning daily in the school of Tyrannus.

Verse 4: And they would not be baptized; neither would they join the church. And they were a separate people as to their faith, and remained so ever after, even in their carnal and sinful state; for they would not call upon the Lord their God.

Note: Faith and sin do not go hand in hand.

Romans 14:22-23 Do you have faith? Have it to yourself before God. Happy is he who does not condemn himself in what he approves. But he who doubts is condemned if he eats, because he does not eat from faith; for whatever is not from faith is sin.

Verses 5-6: And now in the reign of Mosiah they were not half so numerous as the people of God; but because of the dissensions among the brethren they became more numerous. For it came to pass that they did deceive many with their flattering words, who were in the church, and did cause them to commit many sins; therefore it became expedient that those who committed sin, that were in the church, should be admonished by the church.

Note: Sidney Rigdon plagiarized the New Testament.

2 Thessalonians 3:14-15 And if anyone does not obey our word in this epistle, note that person and do not keep company with him, that he may be ashamed. Yet do not count him as an enemy, but admonish him as a brother.

Verses 7-8: And it came to pass that they were brought before the priests, and delivered up unto the priests by the teachers; and the priests brought them before Alma, who was the high priest. Now king Mosiah had given Alma the authority over the church.

Note: Alma was out of touch with the members of the "church."

1 Corinthian 5:9 I wrote to you in my epistle not to keep company with sexually immoral people.

Note: Church is from Old English Cirice; from Middle English chirche. Webster's.

Verses 9-10: And it came to pass that Alma did not know concerning them; but there were many witnesses against them; yea, the people stood and testified of their iniquity in abundance. Now there had not any such thing happened before in the church; therefore Alma was troubled in his spirit, and he caused that they should be brought before the king.

Note: Alma was out of touch with the members of the "church."

1 Corinthians 5:11 But now I have written to you not to keep company with anyone named a brother, who is sexually immoral, or covetous, or an idolater, or a reviler, or a drunkard, or an extortioner; not even to eat with such a person.

Verses 11-12: And he said unto the king: Behold, here are many whom we have brought before thee, who are accused of their brethren; yea, and they have been taken in divers iniquities. And they do not repent of their iniquities; therefore we have brought them before thee, that thou mayest judge them according to their crimes. But king Mosiah said unto Alma: Behold, I judge them not; therefore I deliver them into thy hands to be judged.

Note: Sidney Rigdon forgot to proof read his BOM.

Verse 8: Now king Mosiah had given Alma the authority over the church.

Verse 13: And now the spirit of Alma was again troubled; and he went and inquired of the Lord what he should do concerning this matter, for he feared that he should do wrong in the sight of God.

Note: Alma was out of touch with the members of the "church."

1 Corinthians 5:13 But those who are outside God judges. Therefore "put away from yourselves the evil person."

Verse 14: And it came to pass that after he had poured out his whole soul to God, the voice of the Lord came to him, saying:

Note: Alma should have consulted Scripture like Paul did.

Deuteronomy 19:18-19 "And the judges shall make careful inquiry, and indeed, if the witness is a false witness, who has testified falsely against his brother, then you shall do to him as he thought to have done to his brother; so you shall put away the evil from among you."

Verse 15: Blessed art thou, Alma, and blessed are they who were baptized in the waters of Mormon. Thou art blessed because of thy exceeding faith in the words alone of my servant Abinadi.

Note: Christians are blessed due to sincere belief in Jesus Christ not baptism.

Galatians 3:8 And the Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached the gospel to Abraham beforehand, saying, "In you all the nations shall be blessed."

Verse 16: And blessed are they because of their exceeding faith in the words alone which thou hast spoken unto them.

Note: Christians are blessed due to sincere belief in Jesus Christ not words.

Galatians 3:9 So then those who are of faith are blessed with believing Abraham.

Verse 17: And blessed art thou because thou hast established a church among this people; and they shall be established, and they shall be my people.

Note: Christians are blessed for suffering for Jesus Christ.

Matthew 5:11 "Blessed are you when they revile and persecute you, and say all kinds of evil against you falsely for My sake."

Verse 18: Yea, blessed is this people who are willing to bear my name; for in my name shall they be called; and they are mine.

Note: Christians are blessed for suffering for Jesus Christ.

Luke 6:22 "Blessed are you when men hate you, and when they exclude you, and revile you, and cast out your name as evil, for the Son of Man's sake."

Verse 19: And because thou hast inquired of me concerning the transgressor, thou art blessed.

Note: Will you suffer for Jesus Christ?

Luke 11:28 But He said, "More than that, blessed are those who hear the word of God and keep it!"

Verse 20: Thou art my servant; and I covenant with thee that thou shalt have eternal life; and thou shalt serve me and go forth in my name, and shalt gather together my sheep.

Note: Have you put your trust in Jesus Christ for eternal life?

John 3:14-15 "And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life."

Verse 21: And he that will hear my voice shall be my sheep; and him shall ye receive into the church, and him will I also receive.

Note: Christians believe that Jesus Christ died for their sins.

John 10:14-16 "I am the good shepherd; and I know My sheep, and am known by My own. As the Father knows Me, even so I know the Father; and I lay down My life for the sheep. And other sheep I have which are not of this fold; them also I must bring, and they will hear My voice; and there will be one flock and one shepherd."

Note: Church is from Old English Cirice; from Middle English chirche. Webster's.

Verse 22: For behold, this is my church; whosoever is baptized shall be baptized unto repentance. And whomsoever ye receive shall believe in my name; and him will I freely forgive.

Note: Christians believe that Jesus Christ died for their sins.

Romans 6:3 Or do you not know that as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death?

Note: Church is from Old English Cirice; from Middle English chirche. Webster's.

Verse 23: For it is I that taketh upon me the sins of the world; for it is I that hath created them; and it is I that granteth unto him that believeth unto the end a place at my right hand.

Note: Do you believe that Jesus Christ died for your sins?

1 Corinthians 1:21 For since, in the wisdom of God, the world through wisdom did not know God, it pleased God through the foolishness of the message preached to save those who believe.

Verse 24: For behold, in my name are they called; and if they know me they shall come forth, and shall have a place eternally at my right hand.

Note: Are you suffering for the name of Jesus Christ or Mormon?

1 Pet 4:14 If you are reproached for the name of Christ, blessed are you, for the Spirit of glory and of God rests upon you. On their part He is blasphemed, but on your part He is glorified.

Verses 25-26: And it shall come to pass that when the second trump shall sound then shall they that never knew me come forth and shall stand before me. And then shall they know that I am the Lord their God, that I am their Redeemer; but they would not be redeemed.

Revelation 20:12 And I saw the dead, small and great, standing before God, and books were opened. And another book was opened, which is the Book of Life. And the dead were judged according to their works, by the things which were written in the books.

Verse 27: And then I will confess unto them that I never knew them; and they shall depart into everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels.

Note: Are you written in the Book of Life or in the LDS membership list?

Revelation 20:15 And anyone not found written in the Book of Life was cast into the lake of fire.

Note: Modern Mormons have rejected eternal hell fire.

The false doctrine that the punishment to be visited upon erring souls is endless, that every sentence for sin is of Interminable duration, must be regarded as one of the most pernicious results of misapprehension of scripture. It is but a dogma of unauthorized and erring sectaries, at once unscriptural, unreasonable, and revolting to one who loves mercy and honors justice. True, the scriptures speak of everlasting burnings, eternal damnation, and the vengeance of eternal fire, as characteristics of the judgment provided for the wicked; yet in no instance is there justification for the inference that the individual sinner will have to suffer the wrath of offended justice forever and ever. A Study of the Articles of Faith, James E. Talmage, 1978.

Verse 28: Therefore I say unto you, that he that will not hear my voice, the same shall ye not receive into my church, for him I will not receive at the last day.

Note: Faith not church membership will result in eternal life.

Hebrews 11:16-19 But now they desire a better, that is, a heavenly country. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for He has prepared a city for them. By faith Abraham, when he was tested, offered up Isaac, and he who had received the promises offered up his only begotten son, of whom it was said, "In Isaac your seed shall be called," concluding that God was able to raise him up, even from the dead, from which he also received him in a figurative sense.

Verses 29-32: Therefore I say unto you, Go; and whosoever transgresseth against me, him shall ye judge according to the sins which he has committed; and if he confess his sins before thee and me, and repenteth in the sincerity of his heart, him shall ye forgive, and I will forgive him also. Yea, and as often as my people repent will I forgive them their trespasses against me. And ye shall also forgive one another your trespasses; for verily I say unto you, he that forgiveth not his neighbor's trespasses when he says that he repents, the same hath brought himself under condemnation. Now I say unto you, Go; and whosoever will not repent of his sins the same shall not be numbered among my people; and this shall be observed from this time forward.

Note: God established the church on Pentecost after the teaching of Jesus Christ.

Luke 17:3-4 "Take heed to yourselves. If your brother sins against you, rebuke him; and if he repents, forgive him. And if he sins against you seven times in a day, and seven times in a day returns to you, saying, 'I repent,' you shall forgive him."

Verse 33: And it came to pass when Alma had heard these words he wrote them down that he might have them, and that he might judge the people of that church according to the commandments of God.

Note: The fictional character Alma was not filled with the Holy Spirit.

John 14:25-26 "These things I have spoken to you while being present with you. But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you."

Verses 34-36: And it came to pass that Alma went and judged those that had been taken in iniquity, according to the word of the Lord. And whosoever repented of their sins and did confess them, them he did number among the people of the church; And those that would not confess their sins and repent of their iniquity, the same were not numbered among the people of the church, and their names were blotted out.

Note: Are you written in the Book of Life or in the LDS membership list?

Psalm 69:28-30 Let them be blotted out of the book of the living, And not be written with the righteous. But I am poor and sorrowful; Let Your salvation, O God, set me up on high. I will praise the name of God with a song, And will magnify Him with thanksgiving.

Note: Church is from Old English Cirice; from Middle English chirche. Webster's.

Verse 37: And it came to pass that Alma did regulate all the affairs of the church; and they began again to have peace and to prosper exceedingly in the affairs of the church, walking circumspectly before God, receiving many, and baptizing many.

Note: Why is the LDS church in violation of Christian church doctrine on genealogies?

1 Timothy 1:1-4 Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ, by the commandment of God our Savior and the Lord Jesus Christ, our hope, to Timothy, a true son in the faith: Grace, mercy, and peace from God our Father and Jesus Christ our Lord. As I urged you when I went into Macedonia; remain in Ephesus that you may charge some that they teach no other doctrine, nor give heed to fables and endless genealogies, which cause disputes rather than godly edification which is in faith.

Note: Church is from Old English Cirice; from Middle English chirche. Webster's.

Verse 38: And now all these things did Alma and his fellow laborers do who were over the church, walking in all diligence, teaching the word of God in all things, suffering all manner of afflictions, being persecuted by all those who did not belong to the church of God.

Note: Are you suffering for the name of Jesus Christ or Mormon?

Revelation 14:13 Then I heard a voice from heaven saying to me, "Write: 'Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from now on.'" "Yes," says the Spirit, "that they may rest from their labors, and their works follow them."

Note: Church is from Old English Cirice; from Middle English chirche. Webster's.

Verse 39: And they did admonish their brethren; and they were also admonished, every one by the word of God, according to his sins, or to the sins which he had committed, being commanded of God to pray without ceasing, and to give thanks in all things.

Note: Christians despite suffering will be filled with joy and peace in believing.

Romans 15:13-14 Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. Now I myself am confident concerning you, my brethren, that you also are full of goodness, filled with all knowledge, able also to admonish one another.
