Are You Foolish?
Note: Atheists are fools who are corrupt and do no good.
To the Chief
Musician. A Psalm of David. The fool has said in his heart, "There is
no God." They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is
none who does good. The Lord looks down from heaven upon the children
of men, to see if there are any who understand, who seek God. They have
all turned aside, they have together become corrupt; There is none who
does good, no, not one. Psalm 14:1-3
To the Chief
Musician. Set to 'Mahalath.' A Contemplation of David. The fool has
said in his heart, "There is no God." They are corrupt and have done
abominable iniquity; There is none who does good. God looks down from
heaven upon the children of men, to see if there are any who
understand, who seek God. Every one of them has turned aside; They have
together become corrupt; There is none who does good, no, not one.
Psalm 53:1-3
Note: Fools trust in their wealth and legacy.
Those who trust in
their wealth and boast in the multitude of their riches, none of them
can by any means redeem his brother, nor give to God a ransom for him.
For the redemption of their souls is costly, and it shall cease
forever; That he should continue to live eternally, and not see the
Pit. For he sees wise men die; Likewise, the fool and the senseless
person perish, and leave their wealth to others. Their inner thought is
that their houses will last forever, their dwelling places to all
generations; They call their lands after their own names. Nevertheless
man, though in honor, does not remain; He is like the beasts that
perish. This is the way of those who are foolish, and of their
posterity who approve their sayings. Psalm 49:6-13
Then He spoke a
parable to them, saying: "The ground of a certain rich man yielded
plentifully. And he thought within himself, saying, 'What shall I do,
since I have no room to store my crops?' So, he said, 'I will do this:
I will pull down my barns and build greater, and there I will store all
my crops and my goods. And I will say to my soul, "Soul, you have many
goods laid up for many years; take your ease; eat, drink, and be
merry."' But God said to him, 'Fool! This night your soul will be
required of you; then whose will those things be which you have
provided?' So is he who lays up treasure for himself and is not rich
toward God." Luke 12:16-21
Note: Fools do not praise God.
A Psalm. A Song for
the Sabbath day. It is good to give thanks to the Lord, and to sing
praises to Your name, O Most High; To declare Your lovingkindness in
the morning, and Your faithfulness every night, on an instrument of ten
strings, on the lute, and on the harp, with harmonious sound. For You,
Lord, have made me glad through Your work; I will triumph in the works
of Your hands. O Lord, how great are Your works! Your thoughts are very
deep. A senseless man does not know, nor does a fool understand this.
Psalm 92:1-6
For since the
creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and
divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has
been made, so that people are without excuse. For although they knew
God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but
their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened.
Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools and exchanged the
glory of the immortal God for images made to look like a mortal human
being and birds and animals and reptiles. Romans 1:20-23
Let no one deceive himself. If anyone among you seems to be wise in
this age, let him become a fool that he may become wise. For the wisdom
of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, "He catches
the wise in their own craftiness"; and again, "The Lord knows the
thoughts of the wise, that they are futile." 1 Corinthians 3:18-20
Note: Fools commit adultery and are infected with venereal diseases.
I have perfumed my
bed with myrrh, aloes, and cinnamon. Come, let us take our fill of love
until morning; Let us delight ourselves with love. For my husband is
not at home; He has gone on a long journey; He has taken a bag of money
with him and will come home on the appointed day." With her enticing
speech she caused him to yield, with her flattering lips she seduced
him. Immediately he went after her, as an ox goes to the slaughter, or
as a fool to the correction of the stocks, till an arrow struck his
liver. As a bird hastens to the snare, he did not know it would cost
his life. Proverbs 7:17-23
Note: Bragging fools are wicked and will fall.
Blessings are on the
head of the righteous, but violence covers the mouth of the wicked. The
memory of the righteous is blessed, but the name of the wicked will
rot. The wise in heart will receive commands, but a bragging fool will
fall. He who walks with integrity walks securely, but he who perverts
his ways will become known. He who winks with the eye causes trouble,
but a bragging fool will fall. The mouth of the righteous is a well of
life, but violence covers the mouth of the wicked. Proverbs 10:6-11
Note: Fools are evil slanderers who die from lack of wisdom.
Whoever hides hatred
has lying lips, and whoever spreads slander is a fool. In the multitude
of words sin is not lacking, but he who restrains his lips is wise. The
tongue of the righteous is choice silver; The heart of the wicked is
worth little. The lips of the righteous feed many, but fools die for
lack of wisdom. The blessing of the Lord makes one rich, and He adds no
sorrow with it. To do evil is like sport to a fool, but a man of
understanding has wisdom. Proverbs 10:18-23
Note: Fools will be servants as they are selfish and cause problems.
The generous soul
will be made rich, and he who waters will also be watered himself. The
people will curse him who withholds grain, but blessing will be on the
head of him who sells it. He who earnestly seeks good finds favor, but
trouble will come to him who seeks evil. He who trusts in his riches
will fall, but the righteous will flourish like foliage. He who
troubles his own house will inherit the wind, and the fool will be
servant to the wise of heart. Proverbs 11:25-29
Note: Fools are not wise and their wrath causes harm to others.
The wicked is
ensnared by the transgression of his lips, but the righteous will come
through trouble. A man will be satisfied with good by the fruit of his
mouth, and the recompense of a man's hands will be rendered to him. The
way of a fool is right in his own eyes, but he who heeds counsel is
wise. A fool's wrath is known at once, but a prudent man covers shame.
He who speaks truth declares righteousness, but a false witness,
deceit. There is one who speaks like the piercings of a sword, but the
tongue of the wise promotes health. The truthful lip shall be
established forever, but a lying tongue is but for a moment. Proverbs
12:13-19
Note: Fools will brag about their stupidity and evilness.
Good understanding
gains favor, but the way of the unfaithful is hard. Every prudent man
acts with knowledge, but a fool lays open his folly. A wicked messenger
falls into trouble, but a faithful ambassador brings health. Poverty
and shame will come to him who disdains correction, but he who regards
a rebuke will be honored. A desire accomplished is sweet to the soul,
but it is an abomination to fools to depart from evil. He who walks
with wise men will be wise, but the companion of fools will be
destroyed. Evil pursues sinners, but to the righteous, good shall be
repaid. Proverbs 13:15-21
Note: Fools are prideful, self-confident, deceitful, and wrathful.
The wise woman builds
her house, but the foolish pulls it down with her hands. He who walks
in his uprightness fears the Lord, but he who is perverse in his ways
despises Him. In the mouth of a fool is a rod of pride, but the lips of
the wise will preserve them. Where no oxen are, the trough is clean;
But much increase comes by the strength of an ox. A faithful witness
does not lie, but a false witness will utter lies. A scoffer seeks
wisdom and does not find it, but knowledge is easy to him who
understands. Go from the presence of a foolish man, when you do not
perceive in him the lips of knowledge. The wisdom of the prudent is to
understand his way, but the folly of fools is deceit. Fools mock at
sin, but among the upright there is favor. The heart knows its own
bitterness, and a stranger does not share its joy. The house of the
wicked will be overthrown, but the tent of the upright will flourish.
There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way of
death. Even in laughter the heart may sorrow, and the end of mirth may
be grief. The backslider in heart will be filled with his own ways, but
a good man will be satisfied from above. The simple believes every
word, but the prudent considers well his steps. A wise man fears and
departs from evil, but a fool rages and is self-confident. Proverbs
14:1-16
Note: Fools despise instruction and proclaim stupidity.
A soft answer turns
away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger. The tongue of the wise
uses knowledge rightly, but the mouth of fools pours forth foolishness.
The eyes of the Lord are in every place, keeping watch on the evil and
the good. A wholesome tongue is a tree of life, but perverseness in it
breaks the spirit. A fool despises his father's instruction, but he who
receives correction is prudent. In the house of the righteous there is
much treasure, but in the revenue of the wicked is trouble. The lips of
the wise disperse knowledge, but the heart of the fool does not do so.
Proverbs 15:1-7
Note: Fools bring shame to their parents.
He who begets a
scoffer does so to his sorrow, and the father of a fool has no joy. A
merry heart does good, like medicine, but a broken spirit dries the
bones. A wicked man accepts a bribe behind the back to pervert the ways
of justice. Wisdom is in the sight of him who has understanding, but
the eyes of a fool are on the ends of the earth. A foolish son is a
grief to his father, and bitterness to her who bore him. Proverbs
17:21-25
Note: Fools rage against wisdom and are destroyed.
A man who isolates
himself seeks his own desire; He rages against all wise judgment. A
fool has no delight in understanding, but in expressing his own heart.
When the wicked comes, contempt comes also; And with dishonor comes
reproach. The words of a man's mouth are deep waters; The wellspring of
wisdom is a flowing brook. It is not good to show partiality to the
wicked, or to overthrow the righteous in judgment. A fool's lips enter
into contention, and his mouth calls for blows. A fool's mouth is his
destruction, and his lips are the snare of his soul. Proverbs 18:1-7
But I say to you that
whoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of
the judgment. And whoever says to his brother, 'Raca!' shall be in
danger of the council. But whoever says, 'You fool!' shall be in danger
of hell fire. Matthew 5:22
Note: Fools are twisted perverts.
Better is the poor
who walks in his integrity than one who is perverse in his lips and is
a fool. Also, it is not good for a soul to be without knowledge, and he
sins who hastens with his feet. The foolishness of a man twists his
way, and his heart frets against the Lord. Proverbs 19:1-3
Note: Fools are stupid sinful evil schemers.
Wisdom is too lofty
for a fool; He does not open his mouth in the gate. He who plots to do
evil will be called a schemer. The devising of foolishness is sin, and
the scoffer is an abomination to men. Proverbs 24:7-9
Note: Do not honor or associate with fools.
As snow in summer and
rain in harvest, so honor is not fitting for a fool. Like a flitting
sparrow, like a flying swallow, so a curse without cause shall not
alight. A whip for the horse, a bridle for the donkey, and a rod for
the fool's back. Do not answer a fool according to his folly, lest you
also be like him. Answer a fool according to his folly, lest he be wise
in his own eyes. He who sends a message by the hand of a fool cuts off
his own feet and drinks violence. Like the legs of the lame that hang
limp Is a proverb in the mouth of fools. Like one who binds a stone in
a sling Is he who gives honor to a fool. Like a thorn that goes into
the hand of a drunkard is a proverb in the mouth of fools. The great
God who formed everything gives the fool his hire and the transgressor
his wages. As a dog returns to his own vomit, so a fool repeats his
folly. Do you see a man wise in his own eyes? There is more hope for a
fool than for him. Proverbs 26:1-12
Note: There is no peace with fools.
If a wise man
contends with a foolish man, whether the fool rages or laughs, there is
no peace. The bloodthirsty hate the blameless, but the upright seek his
well-being. A fool vents all his feelings, but a wise man holds them
back. Proverbs 29:9-11
Note: Death is the great equalizer so live life in the wisdom of God.
Then I turned myself
to consider wisdom and madness and folly; For what can the man do who
succeeds the king? Only what he has already done. Then I saw that
wisdom excels folly as light excels darkness. The wise man's eyes are
in his head, but the fool walks in darkness. Yet, I myself perceived
that the same event happens to them all. So I said in my heart, "As it
happens to the fool, it also happens to me, and why was I then more
wise?" Then I said in my heart, "This also is vanity." For there is no
more remembrance of the wise than of the fool forever, since all that
is now will be forgotten in the days to come. And how does a wise man
die? As the fool! Ecclesiastes 2:12-16
Note: The wisdom and salvation of God is foolishness to non-believers.
For the message of
the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are
being saved it is the power of God. For it is written: "I will destroy
the wisdom of the wise and bring to nothing the understanding of the
prudent." Where is the wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the disputer
of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of this world? For
since, in the wisdom of God, the world through wisdom did not know God,
it pleased God through the foolishness of the message preached to save
those who believe. For Jews request a sign, and Greeks seek after
wisdom; but we preach Christ crucified, to the Jews a stumbling block
and to the Greeks foolishness, but to those who are called, both Jews
and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. Because the
foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is
stronger than men. For you see your calling, brethren, that not many
wise according to the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are
called. But God has chosen the foolish things of the world to put to
shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to put
to shame the things which are mighty; and the base things of the world
and the things which are despised God has chosen, and the things which
are not, to bring to nothing the things that are, that no flesh should
glory in His presence. But of Him you are in Christ Jesus, who became
for us wisdom from God--and righteousness and sanctification and
redemption--that, as it is written, "He who glories, let him glory in
the Lord." 1 Corinthians 1:18-31
