Biblical
Liberty and Freedom
1) Liberty
was associated with the Day of Atonement.
And
you shall count seven sabbaths of years for yourself, seven times seven years;
and the time of the seven sabbaths of years shall be to you forty-nine years. Then
you shall cause the trumpet of the Jubilee to sound on the tenth day of the
seventh month; on the Day of Atonement, you shall make the trumpet sound
throughout all your land. And you shall consecrate the fiftieth year and
proclaim liberty throughout all the land to all its inhabitants. It shall be a
Jubilee for you; and each of you shall return to his possession, and each of
you shall return to his family. Leviticus 25:8-10
2) Slavery
must end with freedom and generosity.
“If
your brother, a Hebrew man, or a Hebrew woman, is sold to you and serves you
six years, then in the seventh year you shall let him go free from you. And
when you send him away free from you, you shall not let him go empty-handed; you
shall supply him liberally from your flock, from your threshing floor, and from
your winepress. From what the LORD your God has blessed you with, you shall
give to him. You shall remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, and
the LORD your God redeemed you; therefore, I command you this thing today.”
Deuteronomy 15:12-15
3)
Liberty is known from the word of God.
And I
will walk at liberty, for I seek Your precepts. Psalms 119:45
4) God
brings liberty and peace.
Happy
is he who has the God of Jacob for his help, whose hope is in the LORD his God,
who made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, who keeps truth
forever, who executes justice for the oppressed, who gives food to the hungry. The
LORD gives freedom to prisoners. Psalms 146:5-7
5) The
Messiah brings liberty and peace.
“The
Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon Me, because the LORD has anointed Me to preach
good tidings to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim
liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound;"
Isaiah 61:1
6)
Israel became slaves since they disobeyed God.
“Therefore,
thus says the LORD: ‘You have not obeyed Me in proclaiming liberty, everyone to
his brother and everyone to his neighbor. Behold, I proclaim liberty to you,’
says the LORD—to the sword, to pestilence, and to famine! And I will deliver
you to trouble among all the kingdoms of the earth. And I will give the men who
have transgressed My covenant, who have not performed the words of the covenant
which they made before Me, when they cut the calf in two and passed between the
parts of it— the princes of Judah, the princes of Jerusalem, the eunuchs, the
priests, and all the people of the land who passed between the parts of the
calf— I will give them into the hand of their enemies and into the hand of
those who seek their life. Their dead bodies shall be for meat for the birds of
heaven and the beasts of the earth. And I will give Zedekiah king of Judah and
his princes, into the hand of their enemies, into the hand of those who seek
their life, and into the hand of the king of Babylon’s army which has gone back
from you. Behold, I will command,’ says the LORD, and cause them to return to
this city. They will fight against it and take it and burn it with fire; and I
will make the cities of Judah desolation without inhabitant.’” Jeremiah 34:17-22
7)
Jesus is the Messiah who brings liberty.
So, He
came to Nazareth, where He had been brought up. And as His custom was, He went
into the synagogue on the Sabbath day and stood up to read. And He was handed
the book of the prophet Isaiah. And when He had opened the book, He found the
place where it was written: “The Spirit of the LORD is upon Me, because He has
anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the
brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the
blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed; To proclaim the acceptable
year of the LORD.” Luke 4:16-19
8) Believers
will eventually be liberated from corruption.
For I
consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared
with the glory which shall be revealed in us. For the earnest expectation of
the creation eagerly waits for the revealing of the sons of God. For the
creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of Him who
subjected it in hope, because the creation itself also will be delivered from
the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God.
Romans 8:18-21
9) Liberty
should be used only for the glory of God.
If any
of those who do not believe invites you to dinner, and you desire to go, eat
whatever is set before you, asking no question for conscience’ sake. But if
anyone says to you, “This was offered to idols,” do not eat it for the sake of
the one who told you, and for conscience’ sake; for “the earth is the LORD’s,
and all its fullness.” “Conscience,” I say, not your own, but that of the
other. For why is my liberty judged by another man’s conscience? But if I
partake with thanks, why am I evil spoken of for the food over which I give
thanks? Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the
glory of God. Give no offense, either to the Jews or to the Greeks or to the
church of God, just as I also please all men in all things, not seeking my own
profit, but the profit of many, that they may be saved. 1 Corinthians 10:27-33
10)
The Holy Spirit gives us liberty from religion.
Now
the Lord is the Spirit; and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty. But
we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are
being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as by the
Spirit of the Lord. 2 Corinthians 3:17-18
11) Religious
people will try to introduce rules and regulations.
And
this occurred because of false brethren secretly brought in (who came in by
stealth to spy out our liberty which we have in Christ Jesus, that they might
bring us into bondage), to whom we did not yield submission even for an hour,
that the truth of the gospel might continue with you. Galatians 2:4-5
Note: Religious
people will try to impose the Law on you.
Stand
fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and do not be
entangled again with a yoke of bondage. Indeed I, Paul, say to you that if you
become circumcised, Christ will profit you nothing. And I testify again to
every man who becomes circumcised that he is a debtor to keep the whole law. You
have become estranged from Christ, you who attempt to be justified by law; you
have fallen from grace. For we through the Spirit eagerly wait for the hope of
righteousness by faith. For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor
uncircumcision avails anything, but faith working through love. Galatians 5:1-6
12) Liberty
is to be used to serve one another in love.
For
you, brethren, have been called to liberty; only do not use liberty as an
opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another. For all the law
is fulfilled in one word, even in this: “You shall love your neighbor as
yourself.” But if you bite and devour one another, beware lest you be consumed
by one another! Galatians 5:13-15
For
this is the will of God, that by doing good you may put to silence the
ignorance of foolish men— as free, yet not using liberty as a cloak for vice,
but as bondservants of God. 1 Peter 2:15-16
