The Book of Moroni Chapter 6 Critique
Setting: Repentant persons are
baptized and fellowshipped—Church members who repent are
forgiven—Meetings are conducted by the power of the Holy Ghost. About
A.D. 401–421.
Verse 1: And now I speak
concerning baptism. Behold, elders, priests, and teachers were
baptized; and they were not baptized save they brought forth fruit meet
that they were worthy of it.
Note: Christians are baptized based on their good conscience toward God.
There is also an antitype which now saves us—baptism (not the removal
of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward
God), through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, who has gone into
heaven and is at the right hand of God, angels and authorities and
powers having been made subject to Him. 1 Peter 3:21-22.
Verse 2: Neither did they
receive any unto baptism save they came forth with a broken heart and a
contrite spirit, and witnessed unto the church that they truly repented
of all their sins.
Note: Salvation is based on a sincere confession of Jesus Christ.
Then one of the criminals who were hanged blasphemed Him, saying, “If
You are the Christ, save Yourself and us.” But the other, answering,
rebuked him, saying, “Do you not even fear God, seeing you are under
the same condemnation? 41And we indeed justly, for we receive the due
reward of our deeds; but this Man has done nothing wrong.” Then he said
to Jesus, “Lord, remember me when You come into Your kingdom.” And
Jesus said to him, “Assuredly, I say to you, today you will be with Me
in Paradise.” Luke 23:39-43.
Verse 3: And none were received
unto baptism save they took upon them the name of Christ, having a
determination to serve him to the end.
Note: Salvation is based on a sincere confession of Jesus Christ.
But what does it say? “The word is near you, in your mouth and in your
heart” (that is, the word of faith which we preach): that if you
confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that
God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart
one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made
unto salvation. Romans 10:8-10.
Verse 4: And after they had
been received unto baptism, and were wrought upon and cleansed by the
power of the Holy Ghost, they were numbered among the people of the
church of Christ; and their names were taken, that they might be
remembered and nourished by the good word of God, to keep them in the
right way, to keep them continually watchful unto prayer, relying alone
upon the merits of Christ, who was the author and the finisher of their
faith.
Note: The Christian Gospel does not involve baptism.
For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the gospel, not
with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of no
effect. 1 Corinthians 1:17.
Verses 5-6: And the church did
meet together oft, to fast and to pray, and to speak one with another
concerning the welfare of their souls. And they did meet together oft
to partake of bread and wine, in remembrance of the Lord Jesus.
Note: Christians will comfort and edify one another.
Therefore comfort each other and edify one another, just as you also are doing.
And we urge you, brethren, to recognize those who labor among you, and
are over you in the Lord and admonish you, and to esteem them very
highly in love for their work’s sake. Be at peace among yourselves. 1
Thessalonians 5:11-13.
Verses 7-8: And they were
strict to observe that there should be no iniquity among them; and
whoso was found to commit iniquity, and three witnesses of the church
did condemn them before the elders, and if they repented not, and
confessed not, their names were blotted out, and they were not numbered
among the people of Christ. But as oft as they repented and sought
forgiveness, with real intent, they were forgiven.
Note: Sidney Rigdon tried to change the teachings of Jesus Christ.
“Moreover if your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault
between you and him alone. If he hears you, you have gained your
brother. But if he will not hear, take with you one or two more, that
‘by the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established.’
And if he refuses to hear them, tell it to the church. But if he
refuses even to hear the church, let him be to you like a heathen and a
tax collector.” Matthew 18:15-17.
Verse 9: And their meetings
were conducted by the church after the manner of the workings of the
Spirit, and by the power of the Holy Ghost; for as the power of the
Holy Ghost led them whether to preach, or to exhort, or to pray, or to
supplicate, or to sing, even so it was done.
Note: Christians will be witnesses for Jesus Christ by the power of the Holy Spirit.
“But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you;
and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and
Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” Acts 1:8.
Note: Sidney Rigdon's flawed doctrines are the basis for Mormonism.
